Fingon.
Thinking about Fingon all day long because he sang in defiance, your honor, and resolved to heal the feud that divided the Noldor, and he won great praise and then in sorrow took the lordship of the house of Fingolfin. A shadow of doubt fell upon his heart, and even still, his heart was uplifted, and he shouted aloud: ‘Utúlie’n aurë! Aiya Eldalië ar Atanatári, utúlie’n aurë! He sought not his own, neither power nor glory, and death was his reward.
What am I to do with this guy.
So this is your friendly reminder that a certain heroic part of Sam’s and Fingon’s narratives are the same. To summarize:
✅ Best friend is captured
✅ Go to dark fortress to save best friend
✅ Cannot find best friend
✅ Sing a cool song
✅ Best friend hears song and sings with you
✅ Find best friend and save him
Maybe somehow, in a way, even though the time, language, and situation were very different, they sang the exact same song.
this is a small comic idea i had about maedhros and fingon as kids and i rly wanted to draw it out! i think that is fingon the oldest of fingolfin/finarfin’s kids and thus the only one of the bunch for a while, so it was interesting to think that fingolfin would initially tell him to stay away from uncle feanor’s boys before loosening up in later years
but srsly tho i love the relationships that finwe’s grandkids have with each other so i wanna do more exploring of that! i didnt know if i should post the comic one panel at a time and decided to do it all at once, so i hope it doesn’t look too convoluted now that it’s posted 😬
BONUS: returning to fingolfin + a pretty chill anaire
i’ve started planning some similar comics about maglor and elrond, or maedhros in thangorodrim, so if there’s any you think i should do first feel free to suggest!
Generally I’m a terrible reviewer of fic. When I like something very much, I always want to write a review that would make the writer feel at least half as great as their fic has made me feel, and always end up talking about MY feels instead.
But seriously, emilyenrose’s The Starless Road is one of the best fics I’ve read. It’s a unique case for me, while reading it I had this distinct feeling, sad and bittersweetly hopeful, like I had reading the LOTR itself, closer to its end. It has the same atmosphere, fairy-tale-ish and profound, and something just shines inside it. I loved it and if you haven’t read it yet, go, go. Just wanted to make a little watercolor or Sam and Fingon doing hobbit things together. And now I’m off to cry over them some more.
maedhros: made a spreedsheat to plan his studying and actually managed to stick to it. is prepared for all the classes. passes everything with flying colours and annoys the shit out of you. knows how to turn his stress into something productive. 10/10
maglor: made a spreedsheat to plan his studying and did NOT stick to it. has accepted that he will be failing at least one class and named it his nemesis. spends more time procrastinating than actually studying, but manages to bullshit his way through the questions. you KNOW he didn’t study enough but the teacher doesn’t. 7/10
celegorm: never said he would study and has not. no, actually, that’s a lie; he studied for that one or two classes that he really likes and let maedhros bully him into a quiz for the rest of them and called it ‘studying’. can’t remember the answers to said quiz. doesn’t really care. 5/10
caranthir: said he would study and then procrastinated. crass-coursed entire classes the day before they were due, and managed to pass with a moderately good grade. has like, three classes he excels in because he likes them better. would try to help you study but then you’d both fail. 6/10
curufin: like maedhros but he overachieves. the spreedsheet is colour-coded. the hours he spends studying each class are calculated based on difficulty, on the material, on how much the teacher likes him, on the velocity of the wind during the weekends. aces everything through a coffee and sleep-deprivation induced haze. 11/10
amrod: you’d think he needs to be bullied into studying but he doesn’t. takes turns quizzing himself on the material with each of his family members. sits next to someone and says the whole lesson aloud. he prefers to do it to maglor because maglor barely even notices he’s there. 8/10
amras: does need to be bullied into studying. amrod threatens to quiz him on everything and follows through, leaving amras no choice but to study. complains the whole way through to anyone that will listen. barely passes his classes but he says it’s okay because he won’t need them when he grows up. 3/10
a small gift for my lovely friend @playing-with-inks !! i know how much you love little Fingon and Maedhros, so here's a scene of conductor finno ft. his star musician maitimo, a coat stolen borrowed from him, doting fathers and an orchestra of stuffies belonging to assorted cousins
when I showed it to her in DMs, she pointed out that I usually draw Mae with a braid only after the Nirnaeth Arnododoedid (based on one of my headcanons) and then asked if this is a flashback from his POV, or a dream/hallucination of their happier childhood. after reading that i couldnt help myself so here is a bonus based on her astute observations 👀
Bonus:
OG Art by choistar
at this point its tradition i make one of these for every major fandom i get into so… silm community heres my terrible hot takes on the house of finwe
anyways tag urself im finwe’s dead body that melkor blasted to smithereens
edit: part 2 is out and i totally-did-not-forget-to-add-argon-and-angrod-this-time
the idea of the peredhel twins having heightened senses due to their maia blood is one of the concepts ive seen floating around that i really like, so here's my take on it combined with the feanorians (+ fingon) lingering about as houseless spirits that i explored some time ago in an old inktober post 😌
houseless spirits see all, but they can't interact with the world around them so i suppose that makes for quite a static existence...but compared to an oathbound eternity in Mandos (sans Fingon??), i like to imagine they'll stay a little longer to watch over those left behind, just to make sure they're doing alright 👍🏻
some more lighthearted bonuses cuz why not:
I just realized why so few of Feanor's sons are married:
Feanor is just that good at burning ships.
“Gil Galad is Fingon’s son” “Gil Galad is Angrod’s son” WRONG
Gil Galad is a random orphan Fingon saw one day and went, that looks vaguely son shaped, so he just started raising him as his heir, while refusing to answer any questions about where he came from which led to multiple interactions that went as followed
Courtier: “But high king who’s son is that”
Fingon: “What a silly question he’s mine clearly I gave birth to him”
The same poor fool. “Forgive me high king who’s his… ummmm… father?”
The literal high king of the Noldor: *Scandalized gasp* “how DARE you ask me that”
The Silmarillion according to someone who has never read it but only picked up bits and pieces from the tumblr fandom. For shits and giggles!
Elrond: Let's maybe not swear a binding oath to keep jewelry away from an Ainu at all cost. Let's maybe. Let's maybe just like, pinky promise to do our best. Trust me on this, you don't want to swear any oaths
Maglor the Minstrel.
the second son of Fëanor, "was mighty among the singers of old, named only after Daeron of Doriath. " Yet tided to the Oath, from Alqualondë to the War of Wrath, he is the one chosen by fate to witness every loss of his siblings.
