Seriously though, can we get some acknowledgement of how much one piece’s themes fit really well into that very particular flavor of super down to earth and joyful anarchism? The kind of Emma Goldman saying “If I can’t dance I don’t want to be part of your revolution.” There is such a dense thematic cohesion around freedom and how the person who aspires to be the freest of them all also spreads freedom wherever he goes. Where a wish for a world where people are free is expressed as being able to eat however much they want. Where joy and life are at the forefront of everything, not buried by theory or complicated politics or power struggles. Luffy inherently understands that joy is worth pursuing and that is all he needs to know to understand the world around him. All he needs to know is that when the right to joy is taken from people he cares about (and he cares about anyone he meets who will show him some basic kindness in return for his own) he has fists to throw and rather than being the sole liberator and leader of his own version of freedom he instead just tears down the oppressive structures and gives people back their own belief and hope, leaving them to build something for themselves, something he has no interest being involved in because he can’t take charge of the lives of others. Freedom = joy and life = food in one piece and it’s such a simple way to address it, but it strips away all of the bullshit that overcomplicated it. It presents the theme from a perspective that everyone can understand, no matter how much you understand the specific political situation, or the logistics of revolution. And I think that’s important. It’s important to understand that freedom serves people, because otherwise you run into danger of making people serve an abstract idea of freedom.
