Off Day

Off day

It was a rare thing—you and Dr. Robby both having the day off.

No alarms. No scrubs. No charts. Just the promise of a lazy day and the text he sent the night before:

“Aquarium date tomorrow? I wanna look at jellyfish and hold your hand.”

So that’s how you found yourself the next morning, bundled in one of his hoodies because you claimed it was “scientifically proven” to be warmer than yours (he didn’t argue), standing in line for tickets while he read the informational sign next to the entrance like it was a research paper.

“Did you know cuttlefish have three hearts?” he said, wide-eyed, like he just discovered gold.

You blinked. “Did you know I came here to relax and not learn about tiny squishy marine geniuses?”

He smirked, laced his fingers with yours, and said, “Let’s do both.”

Inside, it was dim and glowing and kind of magical. Blue lights shimmered off every wall, and the water tanks lit up your faces in the prettiest way. Robby was in full dork mode—pointing out fish he recognized, reading facts out loud, whispering things like “That one’s definitely judging me” at the grumpy-looking groupers.

You, of course, were on a different mission.

“Come here. Quick. Stand next to the penguins.”

“For what—?”

“Photos. I need to see who’s cuter.”

He groaned dramatically but leaned in close anyway, letting you snap the photo before whispering, “They win. But only by a beak.”

You laughed so hard a little kid nearby turned around and said, “You guys are loud,” which made you both giggle even more.

And then came the jellyfish room.

You didn’t even have to say anything. The second you stepped inside, Robby’s hand tightened around yours and he whispered, “This is my favorite part.”

You knew that. You remembered him telling you months ago that the jellyfish exhibit calmed him down after rough days. Something about how they moved. How they just existed, floating softly, never rushing.

You watched him more than the jellyfish, honestly.

The way his eyes got quiet. The way his shoulders dropped. The way he leaned his forehead against the glass and exhaled like he hadn’t in weeks.

You slipped your arms around his waist from behind and rested your cheek between his shoulder blades.

He didn’t say anything at first.

Then, softly: “I love it here. But I think I love it more with you.”

Your voice was muffled. “Yeah?”

“Yeah. You make it feel like home.”

You stood there like that for a long time. Just two nerds in love, glowing under soft blue light, surrounded by floating jellyfish and the hum of tank filters.

Eventually, you dragged him to the gift shop where you bought matching plush octopuses (he tried to talk you into a sea slug but you held firm), and he got you both overpriced dippin’ dots because “it’s tradition now.”

On the way home, he drove with one hand on the wheel and one resting on your thigh, and you leaned your head on his shoulder at every red light.

And just before pulling into your driveway, he glanced at you and smiled that soft, quiet smile that was only for you.

“Let’s do this again.”

“What, the aquarium?”

“No. This,” he said, squeezing your hand. “Us. All of it.”

You squeezed back. “Yeah. Let’s never stop.”

Reblog to receive your gift.

Tag your freinds to give them their gifts.

Look under the cut to find out what your transformation is like.

Lycanthrope: your body becomes fluid. The moonlight makes it easier to change, but truly you can do it at any time. It's almost harder to stop yourself from changing then to do it. One momment you're in your human form, the next you're fully a wolf, able to feel the wind in your fur, tell what and where things are from your smell alone, taste raw meat in your mouth, run through the night on all fours. It's so freeing, it's like you were always meant to have this, but you never did before. You even can change parts of your body, give yourself fur if you need warmth, or make your eyes yellow and your teeth sharp. It's so natrual that you transform small parts of yourself just to stim. This is you now.

Goblins: they follow you around now. Each of them looks like a miniature human, only a few inches tall, each wearing outfits of little Victorian clothing, eventually setting up miniature villages where they settle. They live in your room because that's where you live. They think of you as their ruler, they've even given you a little crown, and bring you shiny little things that they enjoy. If you want them to do something for you they'll obey, they're as smart as people but limited by their size and lack of knowledge of the world. They've already stolen some things for you, though they'll stop if you ask them to. And they can do more extreme things, you wonder if they'll kill for you, they probably would. They've even built little statues of you, and it feels so nice to be so beloved.

Fae: he came to you first, massive, with a body like a mantis mixed with a weeping willow, only taking a humanoid form when he needed to talk to you. You don't know what he sees in you, mabye he's in love, though you're not sure love is the right word for it. He'll give you things, food that tastes better then any mortal food, beds that leave you well rested, he'll change your height, your face, your sex, if you want, and make it so that nobody remembers. He's very protective of you though, he killed a man who yelled at you on the street, turned his bones to wood and his skin to autumn leaves. You worry about what your fae will do if he thinks your threatened again.

Knowledge: You can see vast planes of choas. Civilizations eons older then your own, cities made from shining bismuth, cities with iron towers reaching deep into space, and cities strung between multiple planes of existence. You know the true names of the creators of the universe, and know the things that birthed them. You carry these things with you, at work, in your bedroom, on the train. You can tell people, but they'll never understand. Right now this is just what you know, and you are still so very small.

Genderless world: You wake up in a version of your body that's not your own, an androgynous form, with a flat chest, a beardless face, and no sex organs between your legs. You feel oddly freed being here, nobody will see you as a man or a woman, just as a person. You look online to see people happy, existing as they wish to. There's a video of two freinds cuddling naked, and there's no ideas of gender, or even of things like sex or romance, making it awkward. For the first time you can just find someone pretty, and there's no idea of lust to make it awkward or have to mean anything more. You're free here.

Wyvern: You become one with the being. You're it's rider, but in a way you and it are the same being, when it flies you can feel it's flight, and the wind rushing past it. You can see through it's eyes, and all the shimmering colors it can see beyond your species's spectrum. You can feel the heat coming through it's mouth as it breaths out great blursts of flame. And you can feel how comfy it is to wrap it's wings around someone you both love. When you give it commands it's so natrual, occasionally you disagree with it, but it's more like disagreeing with part of yourself, and just like how your personality has influenced it, though it's subtler it's personality has influenced you. You noticed it's eyes have changed to the color of your, and likewise your eyes are now it's bright and vivid red.

Physical removal: Your body lays dead on the ground but your soul is very much alive. You have no physical sensations, the air around you feels like nothing as you float in it. But you can see all around you in 360 vision, and hear so many things. You don't walk anywhere, you don't even float, you just choose to be somewhere in your line of sight and then you are there. You'll never be in pain again. You speak just by choosing to create sounds, and your appearance is likewise entirely of your will, and if you wish for it to be nothing it is nothing. You're finally free, just wait until you figure out how to possess things.

Cyborg: You can feel everything about yourself change around you. Your arm slowly turns to steel, it's muscles and skin and bone replaced with machines of the exact same function, it's nerves becoming wires and computer parts. Your very face becomes a mask of itself, your voice now a speaker, your eyes cameras, everything steel. You feel so protected, so perfect, so safe, undying and powerful. Even your very brain is a computer now, yet everything that makes you yourself is stored there perfectly. You have achieved a new enlightenment.

Psychic power: everything goes dark. Your muscles begin to fail, and eyes grow dim, and you think you are going to die. But then something sparks. You can lift yourself up with your power alone, you can lift everything around you, and you are just one of the many things that you have control of. You aren't bound by anything outside of your mind anymore. You lack any functional sense, but you can feel, hear and see any place or time you wish, and even inside the minds of those close to your human body. You realize that your body isn't even you anymore, you are something far beyond yourself, you feel so small, like a conduit for something great and powerful, your skull is now just a container for your brain.

Pendent: the eldirch sign seems to cling to you. Just testing it out, while you wear it a dice in your hands rolls above a fifteen nearly eighty percent of the time. It's not perfect but it works so well. Your posts online suddenly get a lot more attention, but only when you want them to. You can jaywalk and the cars seem to stay away from you. Apply to jobs and get them. When you gamble the house always loses. You still don't fully understand the mechanics, but this seems to be an excellent start, just make sure to always be wearing it, you fear that the momment it comes off your consequences will suddenly be able to finally reach you.

Vampire: Your body transformes as the blood drains from your neak and the fangmarks the blood flowed out of heal. With eternal youth your skin becomes soft and it's color desaturates, muscle and fat melts away as your form becomes slender and graceful. You feel as if athousand tiny aches and pains you didn't notice before suddenly don't exist. Your mouth transforms into a massivs mess of fangs and hinges like a snake's, but it can very easily fold up into something that passes for human when you want it to. You feel cool, the lack of warm blood is refreshing, your digestive system and reproductive system harmlessly being consumed by your new body, as all bodily functions, even sleep, become alien to you. You feel complete.

Angel: the creature slowly floats around your home. It looks like a mess of wings and eyes, not having the same humanoid facade as its comrades. You don't know what god made it but whoever they are they seem to like you. The angel won't talk to you but it sometimes gives you notions of what it wants, and most of all it just enjoys being pet and cuddled by you. It performs minor miracles to help you out sometimes, and you swear you can hear it sing for you while you're asleep. The creature is surely you're freind, and it's presence gives you some strange feeling of eldritch comfort.
