“you seem in good spirits–” he observes aloud, was partially expecting to walk straight into some kind of deathtrap or at the very least, an earful, after spending the better part of an evening that had been reserved for her, eating wagyu beef with his work chums. he figures maybe they’re beginning to understand each other a little better after all. “but i’m glad that all that’s ironed out because now i can focus on which destination you and i will be jetting off to this weekend to celebrate–” he offers as consolation, grinning wolfishly as he tucks a stray strand behind her ear. “i was thinking somewhere tropical, with lots of room service and very little clothing”

she looks so absolutely enticing tonight, the red stain on her lips having always been his personal preference. briefly, he wonders whether she wore it for him or the onlookers who’d inevitably gawk as she passes by. either way, she was not a woman unaware of her power. it was quite possibly the only thing that held up against his brazenness and endless cash supply, the only thing that could literally bring him to his knees. it’s why he asked her to marry him, after dinner, and only five months of dating, in their private lagoon in iceland, with much fanfare from the resort staff in the form of white rose petals and rare champagne. it’s not necessarily the thought of being without her that drives him mad, but the thought of her ending up with someone that wasn’t him.

he holds his jacket out for her to take, knows that the night air has hit since she arrived, and that the manhattan junior league would be pleased to see that all his chivalrous training had not been for naught. he escorts her out, hand positioned at the small of her back and nods to acknowledge the maitre d who stands at attention until he’s out the door. by the time they make it, the aston is already revved up and waiting to take them to the suite they’re staying in until the contractors finish renovations on the place they’re supposed to be moving into. a beautiful, stately, 5 bedroom, 6 bath that the governor used to reside in, to be completed by the wedding. speaking of–

“how’s wedding planning coming along?” he’s left the task mostly to her, only checking in when it’s absolutely imperative or she invokes his input for the fifth time in a row. “my mother wanted to be sure you add a few more people to the guest list
” she’s been looming over this entire process, allowing lia to think she was in control but ensuring everything was up to coyne standard. declan is, afterall, her dashing boy. and she’s been bragging to the ladies at hamilton house that it would certainly be the event of whatever season it’s in.

image

“I’ve been able to experience some of the different cocktails offered, I’ve discovered a new favorite,” she teased, but while in truth she had the drinks. Lia also didn’t wanna bring their personal drama into the restaurant. Not everyone needed to know what was going on. Under most circumstances she would’ve popped off at least a little bit on him, but the drinks and good conversation had made her feel a little less confrontational. “I’ve been dying to get out of the cold, it’s annoying having to wear a big coat over everything,” huffing a little bit before a small smirk tugged at her lips, “I did place an order for some pretty lingerie and bikinis, I was planning on giving you a fashion show later but surprising you on a trip sounds even more exciting,”

From the minute she discovered the red lipstick as a young child in her sisters makeup, it was what she dreamed of. It made her feel prettier, like she had the attention that Lia thought she deserved. And ever since she started wearing makeup it was her staple, her lucky charm in a sense. The amount of confidence she got from a few swipes of a lipstick was more than she cared to admit. But it was the truth, with her outfits and her makeup it always felt like she could take over the world. And in a sense she had with her clothing line, and experienced it every time she saw someone wear her clothes. But Declan managed to do something similar, having him by her side, *almost*, at her beck and call. It was exhilarating in a sense. Having such a powerful man there for her and ready to run the world together. It’s why she didn’t even hesitate to say yes when he asked her to marry him, not for the private villas or designer closets filled with months worths of non repeating outfits. But because she had genuinely fallen in love with someone who made her feel as good about herself as her fashion had.

“Thank you,” fell from her lips as she stood from her chair, wrapping the jacket a little tighter around herself. Smiling softly as the scent of whiskey and his cologne filled her nostrils. Soft clicks of her heels making her way out the door, nodding softly with a smile on her face to say goodbye the different people she passed. Sliding simply into the seat of the car, and gently placing her bag down on the floor beneath her. Ready to get home and slip into something more comfortable and spend her night with Declan.

“It’s coming along, I finally decided on the floral arrangements and a few parts of the decorations,” a soft smile as she thought of her little book at home with all the details. “I’m still working through a color scheme, he’s proving to be more difficult than I thought it would. There’s so many beautiful colors out there,” sighing softly and leaning back against the seat behind her, “I haven’t even heard of half the people she invited last time you told me that. Why do I want random people at my wedding because your mother wants them there?” Rolling her eyes before shaking her head, “Its my wedding, I’m not continuously going to please her,” Finallt turning to look at him with a sigh, “Anyway, Nessa, Tori, and I are gonna go dress shopping soon. I can’t wait to see all the different options and feel like a Princess,”sending him a soft smile, grabbing his hand in hers, “Any requests or ideas for my dress sir?”

to some extent, though he’d never completely admit it, angel loves hearing himself talk. so the fact that she humors him, acts even the least bit interested in his tales of an inner-city hippie make him like her, just that much more. she didn’t yet fully embody the pompous air that surrounds them, it doesn’t emanate from her and stink up the room like that old lady white diamond perfume that doesn’t come out of this shirt post-shift no matter how many times he runs it through the wash. unlike her man, who in his opinion was too far gone, there was something about her that was still real.

“course not” he chuckles, suspects that she’s been cute all her life. one of those girls that somehow evades the awkward pre-pubescent phase. but he’d be lying if he said he wouldn’t get a kick out of a picture with braces, or dorky glasses, or her rocking a pair of brightly colored skinny jeans with converse all the way up to the knees. but maybe they’d save the embarrassing photo exchange for the next time her boyfriend fiancĂ© stands her up at his own restaurant.

his grin grows twice the size as her story continues, and he tries to paint the picture for himself, poofy princess dress and all. has only ever seen that kind of thing on tv, where girls get dressed up and basically compete to be the prettiest. “oooh, not the carebears” he doesn’t try to the stifle the laugh that bursts as her story concludes, even claps a little, surprised at the commitment. “well at least you kept it going. my ass would’ve been off the stage asap. but i think it’s cool you used to tumble. i’ve always wanted to know how–could probably use it in some of my dances and shit.
think you could–?” before he can get the words out the air changes, dishes clank faster, conversations lull, eyes point in a certain direction. he looks up to see him approaching, cutting their fun short, bringing him back to reality–just a little.

“sweetheart–” the boss man greets his lady divine, placing a chaste kiss against her cheek. “my meeting with the gentlemen that own the space on king street ran late, but we’re in talks to break ground for a separate location by june” his breath smells like whiskey, they went out for drinks after in celebration but he neglects that minor tidbit. it’s just then that he just barely acknowledges angel’s presence, sends a dismissive glare in his direction, and as quickly as he appeared, angel waves a small goodbye to miss amelia.

image

A small part of Amelia had missed this, just a light hearted conversation and laughs. No mention of business or wealth, instead swapping childhood stories. It was refreshing, a change of pace from what she had become accustomed to. And watching Angel talk so animated, not caring how he looked or sounded, she missed it even more. For a while she was used to that, just being open and honest. Never worrying about what people thought or how they reacted to what she had to say. Lia was always the girl who spoke first, and thought second, it was her norm. But after a few years in the big leagues, she had lost her touch and became more self aware of her words.

“It would’ve been ridiculous, I learned the ways of curling irons and straighteners at a young age. Also learned straighteners didn’t work on sexuality at a quick age as well,” she joked, and a small laugh bubbled from her. But the fashion choices she made didn’t get all to grand until middle school, and even then they weren’t exactly the fashion trends of the time but at least she was matching the colors finally.

A grimace appeared on her face as she laughed, the image clear as day in her head. Lia was pretty positive her mom had a video somewhere of the tragic event, but she also couldn’t remember the last time she spoke to her mom. “It was,” a pause as the thought of the right adjective. “Embarrassing, but also taught me at a young age that I was able to just push through I guess,” Nodding along with the his statement, “I would-“ began to leave her lips before she felt the atmosphere thicken around her. The dinging of dishes being cleared faster, a slight squeaking from the cleaning rags on the glasses at the bar, and a sigh from her lips as her conversation was ended and the explanation she’s heard over and over ready to hit her ears.

A soft smile on her lips as he pecked her cheek, turning her attention from the man in front of her and turning towards the man on her side. “I’m glad you guys have finally figured that plan out, it seemed like it was never ending. Hopefully the blueprints and planning will go smoothly,” ignoring the notes of whiskey hitting her senses, and trying to relax into his presence. The wannabe heiress in Lia coming out to play once more, and only a flicker in her stature as Angel walked away from the couple.

All Vanessa could do was nod. It wasn’t her place to really question or need to know anymore than was being told to her. Vanessa purposely stayed out Athletics to avoid comparisons to her brothers and her little crush on the Dallas boy who lived down the block. The Hounds were known and the reputation of the kind of girls that appealed to them was legendary to the town coining a nickname for those kind of girls. Her father always warned what happened to those kind of girls.“It’s really not my business. You don’t have to explain,” she explained, nonchalantly.

“What gave it away?” Vanessa was shy in the most traditional sense, but when it came performing Vanessa shined. She didn’t need words or brains to try and impress people, just being in tune with her body was enough. Her movements said all her words were too shaken to say. “Unfortunately, ballerinas don’t have the luxury of Wrestlers and Hockey players where all you have to do is bulk up and block. I tend to bake more than I actually get to enjoy,” Vanessa replied playfully.

And soon as the idea of other plans came up, Vanessa felt herself whimpering away a bit. If there was something he felt was more important to go to it felt better to give permission than to bee stood up. Or at least that’s how she thought of it. “We could meet after if you want?” Cheeks flushing immediately red as the words beautiful escaped her lips. “No nickname needed. V or Nessa usually gets my attention.”

image

He bit his lip, a nervous habit he picked up when he was younger. Not often did he get nervous with girls, but then again none of the girls that he was around were like vanessa. Not immediately trying anything she could to bed him, instead actually holding a conversation. She was quiet, but not in a weird way, it was endearing, it made him want to learn more. Dallas wanted to learn about her, get to know the girl hiding in the shadows. “But I want you to know the truth, theres a million rumors surrounding the team and yet no one really knows the truth but us,”

“Not saying anything, but youre tinier than most humans in the height department. And they tend to be able to be lifted in the air easier, and move lighter on their feet,” He spoke, the few amounts of dance knowledge he got from his siblings and cousins, “And theres not a lot of gymnasts around here, which is ironically made for smaller people based on the movements, but youd need a little but more muscle mass and calloused hands for that one,” he joked, before laughing lightly, “ill give you, it does have its perks but we still have to be cautious of what we eat, not everything is made for healthy bulking. However, I was taught to never turn down baked goods from a known female,” sending a wink at her before smiling softly.

Dallas shook his head, “ive been to more than enough team after parties, its always the same thing. Id rather spend time with my new best friend, get to know you better, and maybe introduce you to some fun spots around town,” Nodding at the nicknames, “Theyre nice, but I want something unique, something like,” pausing as he mused over the thoughts in his brain, “Vanni,”

She could see how off Kai looked, hell she looked the same underneath all he carefully placed makeup, but Vanessa couldn’t find it within herself to find empathy. She wasn’t there, but she had spent her ow time beating herself up literally and metaphorically trying to deal with it all. “Stop it,” Vanessa replied firmly. “I’ve been dealing with your bitchin’ and moanin’ for the past two weeks and I’m sick of it. You know what it means to be a part of this family, heartbreak or not. If you’re not going to act accordingly, don’t come.”

Right away Vanessa heard hints of their mother’s Souther draw in her voice, but she immediately shook it off; a face resembling their father’s apathy taking its place. “No one is going to care that Mama died after this. People are going to assume we lost our mother to gang violence, drugs, or that she’s doing time. So either honor Mama now or spend the rest of your life ruthlessly defending her. Either way you’re making an enemy of yourself in your home. She wouldn’t want that.”

Once their eyes met, Vanessa knew she had to hope strength. Though her eyes were blood shot, anyone who knew her not a singular tear was actually shed––just rosy cheeks and slightly slowed movements were her guide. She followed in line, taking her place as the middle child between her brothers.

“You’re going to regret this,” she whispered.

image

‘Part of this family’ he repeated back to himself as he spoke, a phrase he began getting used to hearing. Anytime he disagreed with a simple statement now, it was seen as disobeying his father and hed get the same lecture on how if he was a ‘part of the family’ then he would do as his older siblings did. Which in Kais mind, meant following along like a little puppy and hanging onto his every word. “Youre right I forgot mourning and recovery had a time limit, my apologies for burdening the great Vanessa Montgomery who tells people she has one brother,” And even at his age, he was as individual as they came, and to much of a mommas boy to worry about being in his fathers good graces. He knew he was always protected no matter how angry his father got, but now? He was out in the open, ready for the hunting and no one in his family or their friends were there to protect him and have his back, ”easy for you to say,” slipped through his lips before he had the time to process his thoughts.

“Ah yes, the police chiefs wife in jail, doing drugs, or involved with a gang. Thatll really seal his legacy huh?” He hissed out before sighing for a moment, rubbing his face roughly. “Look, you keep up whatever picture perfect appearance you think you need to have. Unlike those two, and clearly yourself, I dont care if i show emotion. Everyone has an emotion, and everyone shares it in their way. Unfortunately for myself, I have three stone faced people surrounding me. Im gonna look out of place regardless if I speak or not, Id rather save myself the knowledge of knowing everyone saw me sobbing at my mothers coffin,”

He smiled and shook hands of the people who went by, nodding at some of words given his way. Already feeling to small for the group around them and wanting to slink to the corner with his mom, but unfortunately this would become his new normal. Being in the middle of the attention given to the Montgomery, regardless if they all knew the truth or not.

“Have you even thought to ask me what I want to do to honor Momma, or are you to busy pleasing dear old dad to care?” He whispered, before smiling at the gentleman in front of him.

he matches her expression. thick brows raised, just subtly at her comment about getting lucky. angel wasn’t sure that he even believed in luck,  not in the sense of four leafed clovers and wishing on stars anyway. all his luck had to be created, almost manufactured to the point that he didn’t know if it still qualified as luck at all, or rather just the universe finally throwing throwing him a bone. but in the moment, hearing the word spring so confidently from her lips, he’s certain that she could get him to believe in anything as long as it comes out in that same silvery tone.

“well versed, huh? well how’s about a deal? if your fiancĂ© doesn’t walk through those doors in the next twenty minutes i’ll smoke you out in my car–” he mentions, feeling a little bold. usually tries not to get high off his own supply, but for this one he makes a mental note to simply pay himself back. “and if it ain’t some of the best shit you’ve ever had i’ll get you whatever you want to eat after” he realizes that if his boss caught wind of his little plan he’d be without a job before he could say ‘munchies’, but he rationalizes it in his head as a friendly gesture. anyone knows that food is only the next logical step to follow a fat joint, and if they picked up buffalo wings and ate them in the front seat it most certainly did not qualify as a date.

he lingers in their handshake maybe a little longer than he should’ve. and he never feels shy, but for some reason can’t resist the urge to briefly break eye-contact as she too leans a little closer. “well
anything” he speaks in earnest, “anything you want, but bonus if it’s funny-” he notices tamara start to clean, doesn’t want to be left behind on the hull so he at least makes himself look busy by wiping down the same spot three times over. “here i’ll go first. when i was in the second grade my mama shaved my head–i’m talking bald, bald mr. clean type shit. i don’t know if it was a miami thing or what, but all the moms shaved their kids heads to make their hair grow in better. only thing is–most of em’ did it before their kids even turned two, so here they are with these full heads of hair by the time we’re seven and i’m over here looking like vin diesel” one of his proudest accomplishments is making sure that no photographs from that era have ever seen the light of day, but even without the physical evidence the image in his mind’s eye is clear as day. “so boom, valentine’s day rolls around like a week after, and my shit is still looking tragic. and there was this one girl, lorena cook, that i had my ma get a little extra candy for because i’d been planning for months to ask her out on the big day. but i couldn’t step to my honey with a jacked up hairline. soo
i went in my abuelita’s wig closet, got one of her short wigs and cut it even shorter so it was mad patchy, and stuffed it in my bag to wear to school the next day, so it went from mr. clean to little richard if he let ray charles do his line ups..needless to say that ended with my teacher calling home crying laughing and a chancla to the face”

image

Lia slowly placed her hand back into her lap as he let go, suddenly aware of the lost warmth, a slight draft enveloping her hand back into the chill of the room. Red manicured fingers circling the stem of the glass, bringing it to her matching lips and sipping as he spoke. Laughing at the animated way he told the story, picturing the current curly locks on his head gone and an egg in its place. “I feel like I’ve heard this story from one or two cousins at one point but continue,” she quipped, hanging onto every word as if it was the best story she heard. Hoping to one day get him to show her a picture to replace the image she was creating herself. Her hand softly covering her mouth as she tried to hide the laugh that bubbled out as he finished his story, her smile evident as she finally dropped it back to her lap. “I think you would’ve looked great, egghead or horrible lace front aside,”

“Now, I can’t say I have bad hair stories, one thing my mama and older sister instilled in me was to make sure your hair was always put together,” shrugging slightly, “however, i do have a bad wardrobe moment,” sipping her drink one more time before sitting up straighter in her seat. “When i was probably about 8 or 9, my cousin Tori was always in pageants as we grew up. And I of course wanted the pretty princess dress with the ginormous poof that dragged on the ground and got dirty within four seconds of wearing it. But it was toris thing and I didn’t want to infringe on her thing even at a young age. My mother however, thought differently and enrolled me in a pageant. So there I was, backstage at my first pageant, watching all the other girls perform their talents. And I had decided I was gonna do some tumbling, you know the flips and bounces you see gymnasts or cheerleaders do,” her hands bouncing around in front of her like she was trying to show what she meant with her fingers, “I was always good at it, picked it up quick, so I knew it would do good with judges. Wellll, I decided I would wear my bright magenta gown to do these tumbling tricks, the more movement the better right? Wrong. I started my first handspring and as I landed on my feet, the right one landed on the bottom of the dress and as i stood up a loud rip was heard and the room went silent. Now, Amelia being the center of attention I am, decided I was gonna just keep going and act like it never happened. Except when I landed on it again, this time ripping the entire skirt off thanks to the first rip, and my care bear underwear on display for everyone backstage and in front of me, never did another pageant again. Tori could keep it and I’d move on to cheerleading, no long dresses involved,” and to this day, Lia will typically be found in a short dress, or a two piece skirt and top.

“Not really into the reviews. Rather find out for myself and return the favor,” Luke smirked. The idea of reviews raised his eyebrow, but he kept a brave face. In this town, who you are and what you did matter. The town was hierarchy of personalities and the Bakers were at the top. Lia would be a political and religious liability; that only intrigued Luke more––something to sneak around, his eyes only, and still maintain peace all around. Sound like an easy year for Luke. “Appearances are everything,” he affirmed, matching the eye contact. He was swift with hiss movements, cutting the engine, and moving from his door to hers. “Don’t think too much into it. Gotta sister and a mother and a church full of Sisters’ who command respect.” he downplayed to make it seem like he was trying to be impressive.

image

She raised a perfectly kept brow at him, tilting her head slightly, “what a gentleman, unfortunately I’m not here for the gentle side of things,” a shrug falling off her shoulder, moving to look out the window again. While her family was big in the town, her parents helping more than one family around get off scot free, she was a different story. Falling from her spot as the favorite, she became distant, relishing in any and all alcohol and drugs she could get her hands in. Lia became more well known around the ravine, and around the degenerates of town, and slowly slipped from the hierarchy. Still keeping her place in school, never letting herself fall lower than she deserved there. But she didn’t care what the adults had to say, they weren’t the ones she had to interact with day in and day out. Instead taking a line here or there, maybe pop a pill when she felt like it, but always had a water bottle of vanilla rum and Dr Pepper, and a blunt or dab pen handy in her purse. Those were the secrets no one else around school knew, the ones she held close to herself for reasons unknown to her. “So I’ve been told once her twice,” Lia knew the bakers reputation around town, but she never got close enough to see it for herself. After her fathers diagnosis she wasn’t one for God, or believing in a higher power. She just existed and let the world do as it did, never worrying about the consequences of what she was doing; yet still being semi aware of herself. Watching as he moved around the car, and slipping out of the seat, a soft click as her heels touched pavement. “Don’t all women? Commanding and deserving, however, two different things,”

Kai hadn’t moved from his place in front of the mirror, his gaze never moving from his reflection. If anyone walked by they’d think he was possessed, like he was just looking through himself. The cuts and bruises from the accident still present, but faded slightly as days passed. And the memories still as vivid as the day it happened, every time he closes his eyes he saw the bright blue and red lights, the sound of the sirens blaring in his ears, and the image of his mother lifeless in front of him.

“You think I give a fuck about appearances? You think I can get up and speak about her? Like I don’t think about her every second of everyday, and the worst part is I can’t even remember the good things! I can’t remember the love she showed us, or the jokes she make, or anything besides seeing her laying there,”

“None of you know what I went through, father or Nate haven’t even asked me a question about it or checked to see how I’m doing. We’re all mourning, we’re all crushed by the fact momma is gone. But none of you were there, none of you had to see it or experience what we did. And god, it shouldn’t fucking be her who’s gone. It’s not like anyone would’ve missed me anyway,” he spoke, finally turning from the mirror and facing his sister. His eyes rimmed with tears, before walking right past her, head held high and taking his place in line with his family.

Kai Hadn’t Moved From His Place In Front Of The Mirror, His Gaze Never Moving From His Reflection.

“You know it’s Mama’s wishes that you speak.” Vanessa approached, clad in an all black lace gown that exposed skin both on her mid-drift and her thighs, crossing her arms as she approached her brother. You couldn’t tell from Vanessa’s appearance, but the moment was somber as ever. Everyone surrounding them in all black, paying their respects, and getting unnecessarily close to hugging each of the Montgomery siblings.

Vanessa looked over the crowd, eyes locking with their father’s right away. There were tears his eyes, bit no resemblance of pain. No droopy eyes, sleepless nights, or weightless heart to match. Just a stern nod and back to shaking hands the eldest Montgomery went. “I get it you’re in the middle of the, God forgive my language, fuck the world and everyone in it mood but right now you need to be a Montgomery. You already know what’s waiting at home if we don’t perform. So play your fucking sweet, artistic dreamer role and be miserable after. People are watching.”

fiancĂ©. the word rings in his ears no sooner than he can spot the glacier poised perfectly on one of her dainty fingers like it was made for her. as far as he knows, it was. and it immediately occurs to him that if he thought this girl was out of his league before, she’s light years away by now. if there’s one thing he’s learned in this life it’s that so many things are purely transactional. girls with the looks to land the big ballers do, and they don’t look back. hell, he wouldn’t either if it guaranteed a rock the size of an ice-skating rink and a life most can only dream of.

but he considers her, the way her lip curls just slightly at his lame joke, and he’s not ready to dub her a gold-digger just yet. “she smiles” he comments the minute her expression breaks, eyes transfixed on the dimples in her cheeks, the deepest he’s ever seen in real life. and he can’t help but feel just a little proud to have made her smile like that. even if this is the only interaction they’ll ever have, he can walk away with the consolation that he could at least make a dull evening less so. he’s always prided himself on his ability to lighten the mood, even at his own expense. maybe leaned into it a little too much back in high school, when he got suspended for burping the pledge of allegiance over the intercom and setting off firecrackers in the boy’s bathroom. but since his nuts dropped and the semi-maturity kicked in, he’s been able to find a healthy balance between class clown and complete idiot.

“one rose for every minute you’ve been sitting here, it’s only right–”  and he doesn’t disclose this information to his usual patrons, but she seems about thirty years younger, and ten times cooler than most of the people that frequent this place. “you know–” he speaks an octave lower, “if you’re ever looking for a little escape i happen to specialize in herbal refreshments. good shit too, straight from cali” he brags a little, plays around with so many things but never about his premium supply.

leaning over onto his elbows, he smiles a tiny smile when she butters him up, can’t tell if she’s being genuine or just blowing smoke, but he prefers to be kept guessing anyway. he shakes her hand, fancy rock and all, and thinks fast for some excuse to keep the conversation going. “so miss amelia
you know gut-spilling is pretty customary to the bartender/client relationship and this place doesn’t close for another half hour
story for a story? i know you got some crazy ones, don’t hold out on me girl”

Lia had always hoped to become the housewife. Never having to lift a finger to do anything, and being able to infinitely shop as much as she would like. Her closet already a prime example of such, everything she dreamed of and more. And yet, she still didn’t feel complete. Like something was missing, perhaps money didn’t actually buy happiness. Oh who was she kidding, it bought her happiness. But having attention from the person she loved brought her more, and as the years of gone on she found herself losing it more and more. It left her feeling conflicted, not knowing her next move.

It wasn’t like she hadn’t found herself admiring the man behind the bar before, wondering what his story was. How he ended up in such a prim and proper place, yet seemed out of place almost. She found him intriguing, always seeming to make the best with the customers despite the more savory comments made by them. He still held his cool, a small laugh and a comment from him before he began their drinks. She caught herself watching him more than she wanted to admit, the way his lips curled as he smiled, the dimples on his face just as if not more apparent as her own. But it was the humor that captured her, the playfulness in almost all his comments she had been able to hear. Whether to make someone feel better, or just to make conversation. She enjoyed the little glimpses she could get, whether her fiancĂ© was around or not.

“Now that would surprise me, might even get lucky with that gift,” sipping her drink with a raised brow, “well well well, the dirty secret has been revealed,” shrugging ever so slightly, crossing her legs under the bar top, “but I will play along, and gladly take some of whatever you have to offer. I’m quite well versed,” knowing the amount of people their age around the place, it wasn’t the best place to sell. But then again, every so often the old rich guys would want to show off for their younger play things. Something Lia was used to in her past life, and the showing off was always worth it for her.

His hands were softer than she expected, but still had a certain roughness to them that felt good against her well manicured and moisturized hands. Adjusting her ring slightly before smirking at his words, leaning in closer as she spoke, “well that depends on which part of my life you want to hear about, I’ve been lucky to experience quite a bit in my short time of life. Some activities more illegal than the others, but all fun none the less,”

he’s no stranger to mr. impervious, may have only been employed at della femmina for about two weeks now but when the brunette beauty sheds light on his impatient streak he instantly recalls having been snapped at for not having the man’s friday 5 o’clock old fashioned ready for him the moment he walked through the door. like he was just supposed to know. he assumes since the silver spoon he’s been made to feel very important, and now he leads a very important life, consorting with other very important people, and protecting what’s most important–his money. but what would he know, anyway? he didn’t grow up with two pennies to rub together and these days he hustles, (and apparently gets dressed in bowties and tight ass blouses) to keep the lights on.

his thoughts return to her though. and he’s aware that it’s mostly none of his business, but he can’t help but think about where he picked her up. “college?” he wonders, as he rattles the martini shaker, maybe she also had a set of loaded parents that set them up. people with money were into that kind of shit, right? maintaining the bloodlines and all. but any train of thought he has is interrupted when he takes note of her grim expression.

“hey, hey, hey–no pouting at my bar” he says in a tone that’s half stern, half playful. wags his finger as if the rule were plastered behind him in bright red letters for all to see. steadily, he pours her a new glass and immediately assumes his default of reassuring goofball. ’m sure your boyfriend’s gonna come through that door any minute with a bouquet bigger than ya head” he’s all animated, gesturing with his hands til he realizes–”not that your head is big or nothing
” he clarifies a little more meekly. and before she gets the chance to look at him funny–

“i’m angel” not carlos like his name tag reads, apparently such a fancy establishment couldn’t be bothered to have a new one created for his first few shifts. “a girl’s name i know, don’t worry i got clowned enough for it in elementary”

It wasn’t anything new to Amelia, the way he treated the bartenders or waiters at restaurants. At first it intrigued her, having the unlimited wealth to do just about anything you wanted, no repercussions. It was something she looked for her entire life, having access to an amount that equaled half of the Coyne wealth once. But losing it and having to find means to get back what she once knew, that’s something he would never understand. Hell Lia hadn’t been honest with him about her line of work before Declan, all the different men and places she’s gone. All of them hid away in her memory, and the documents hiding in a box shoved to the back of the closet. It was something he didn’t have to understand, working for money. Even if it was a semi illegal way for Lia to do so.

She had been playing with her empty glass, her finger lightly brushing against the bottom of the bowl to spin it around. Her mind occupied with wondering where exactly her knight in shining armor was, glancing towards the door for a moment before moving back to her glass. Lia couldn’t say she was shocked by his late arrival, or lack there of an arrival. It wasn’t always like that, he always made a point to pick her up and show her off in the beginning. And now, here she was going on hour three of waiting, And she also suddenly became aware of little details. For instance, it wasn’t very often was she asked about their relationship, despite the length they’d been together, and definitely not asked about how they came to be. She assumed Declan had already told his people, or the people around him; but maybe they just didn’t care about his lil arm candy much. Or he just didn’t care to talk about her and have to make up stories about her life and wealth.

A small giggle leaves her lips as she sits up a little straighter, the male gaze always bringing some kind of confidence to Amelia. “I should’ve noticed the neon lights screaming no pouting only alcohol how dare I,” a playful tone in her words, watching the liquid stream down into her glass, almost transfixed on the movement for some reason. “I would bet money on there being no bouquet, I can’t remember the last time my fiancĂ© surprised me,” she sighed, before shrugging it off, “but that’s what alcohol and drugs are for, to brush it off and forget about it,” nodding her head with her words, confirming it for herself. The messed up cycle she created years ago, always seemed to find its way back to her.

She glanced down at the name tag he wore and raised a brow, “um, angel, sweetie, you’re name tag is lying to everyone here,” she jokingly whispered to him, keeping a serious look on her face but the giggle came through almost instantly. “I think it’s cute, you could like play into the whole guardian angel thing if you think about it,” taking a sip of her drink, extending her hand out, after making sure her drink was secure on the bar top. “Amelia, it’s a pleasure to actually speak with you Angel,”

It seemed even after all this time, Lia was still more invested in making a good impression. Making it to places on time, even sometimes a lil earlier than she should. Made sure she looked like a million bucks, between the dresses and heels, and most certainly with the different gemstones that lined her neck and wrists. And yet, she still found herself waiting more times than not for a dirty blonde head to show up. A smile adorning both their faces once he did, and she always forgot why she was upset or that she had been forced to wait for however long.

And it didn’t bother her to much to wait, her wandering eyes and all.

Lia was used to having eyes on her, ever since she was a little kid. She knew how to capture the attention she so desperately craved, and she was good at keeping it. It was almost like she could feel it, the different gazes from different people in the room. The jealousy coming from the girls, an occasional smirk and a smile sent their way as she sipped her drink. Not that there was much to be jealous of, she was alone at the bar waiting for her knight in shining armor. But it was getting more and more frustrating for her, the waiting, and the games. Never knowing when he would show up, nor for how long. She was almost to her breaking point, but something kept her coming back despite wanting to tell Declan to fuck off.

Her eyes had been training to the bartender every so often, every time she found herself at the bar, she’d be stealing glances.

“Ironically, boss man himself doesn’t like to be kept waiting,” a small chuckle, almost breathlessly, left her lips. “I’m beginning to think it may be me,” a small pout forming as she looked up at him through her lashes. The alcohol over the past couple hours inhibiting her normal censorship of words, which was already limited.

It Seemed Even After All This Time, Lia Was Still More Invested In Making A Good Impression. Making It

the words of his childhood best-friend turned roommate, ricky rye with the wonky eye, ring in his ears not to “goof this one up” as he stands stiff behind the marble countertop this place tries to pass off as a bar.  he’s one of the line cooks, and the one that landed him the job at this fancy schmancy restaurant when the last bartender neglected to return after a roadtrip to saskatchewan  but of all the temporary jobs he’s held  over the years, he’s never had one where he had to address every customer strictly as “sir” or “ma’dam”, or put on a dress shirt and tie just to serve alcohol. and fuck what you heard, most rich people tip like shit.

still, the job has one perk.

all night he’s been stealing glances of the doe-eyed beauty from the opposite end of the bar, certain that the boss man would be in any minute now to ward off any wandering eyes, lay claim to her with a kiss on the cheek and a pompous glare thrown strategically in the direction of the help. a subtle reminder to all the little people, yet again, of why he truly was a master of the universe.

but as minutes turn to hours he grows a little bolder. until finally, when her glass needs refilling, he tells tamara that he’s got it this time.

“boss man must be running late” he offers nonchalantly as he goes to mix another martini, and wonders deep down what in the world could be important enough to keep a girl like this waiting.

“Anyway they can?” Her mind could assume what that meant, but Vanessa wasn’t as naive as she looked. Vanessa had brothers; she knew how they talked about the girls they liked and even heard how they spoke around their friends. Wouldn’t be surprising to hear worse from the hockey boys. “Figured you had enough people in your life, plus my Mama always said when you’re wanted, they’ll know,” Vanessa recited, a hint of softness in her tone.

“Hey, never said they’d be cheat day worthy. Dancers gotta stay inn shape just as much as hockey players do!”

Once again, Vanessa found her eyes fluttering at hiss words, finding a warmth she didn’t realize Vanessa wanted. “And we could
um, hang out after too.” And for once it was a direct statement. Not dancing around the topic or showing fear, but asking directly for what she wanted. “Unless you gotta curfew, Mikey,” Vanessa teased, using the nickname for the first time.

“Some people like to take extreme measures to ensure they’re seen,” he shrugged, “I’m not gonna sit here and lie to you and say I haven’t taken them up on their offers, but it’s few and far between,” he knew the secrets of the hounds weren’t really secrets, the boys tending not to keep their mouths closed when other people are around. But he also knew they liked the overdramatize their escapades, making for a lot of unknowns and rumors.

Dallas couldn’t help the chuckle from his lips, her physique making much more sense now that he knew she was a dancer. “Let me guess, you’re one of them ballerinas? Even a ballerina needs a good set of waffles, maybe I’ll have to take you to my favorite stop,”

He smiled softly as she spoke, noticing a sudden confidence lacing her words. Her words more direct, not a question, or assumption, but a plan. “Not so much a curfew as the team always likes to have a lil party of sorts, but I will be more than glad to blow them off for you. Some of em have been in my life for way to long, but I also can’t see it without em,” a small sigh following his words, looking down for a second. , “anyway,” he spoke shrugging it off, and glancing back up. “Since I happen to have a new nickname, looks like I gotta figure one out for a beautiful girl,”

“Maybe not for you,” Luke replied matter of factly. He let his free hand find its way to her thigh, comfortability giving it a bit of a squeeze. Always one to press his luck once he got enough time with a girl. He wasn’t much of a pick bunny guy, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t tempted––hell look who Luke was with––but it never went past fun temptation at least that’s what his Hounds and the greater public knew anymore. “I pay for a bit of
discretion with my guy. You understand.” Luke turned to look directly at Lia, hoping she would get that discretion needed to extend to this as well. “Dirty little secret, eh?” he chuckled more to himself than to Lia. He pulled into his apartment complex, cutting the engine.

“I think it would depend on who you ask,” a simple shrug, relaxing into the seat a little more and looking over at him, “I’ve gotten a rave review one or twice,” laughing airily, almost like a small sigh. Her gaze finding his as he turned towards her, the look in his eyes telling her this this was a secret. That it was to stay between the two of them, and something told her it would be like that for a while. “I understand wanting to keep up appearances. I have my own discretions, you don’t have to worry about me,” making sure she kept his gaze as she spoke. Lia wanted to be sure he could trust her, no matter what secrets came her way. “We all have one or two, im sure time will reveal more as we go,” Turning away from him only when she felt the cut of the engine, and looking to see where they were.

All Vanessa could do was nod. Of course he’d have some hometown girl by his side, plenty of high school turned frat boys, and a town rallying every game. It was the life people always spoke highly in regards to the Dallas child. She couldn’t imagine the pressure of having the world on her shoulders like that.  Her heart immediately dropped hearing the phrase puck bunny. “Oh.” That was all she could manage. It wasn’t her place to feel insecure about other girls, but knowing Dallas played into the idea it only made her feel like Dallas wouldn’t be interested if held out.

She fixed her demeanor, quickly flashing a soft smile and brushing pieces of hair out of her face. Vanessa didn’t want it to seem like it affected her at all. “I would.. very much like that if you could? And I can totally pay you back or bake you waffles or something,” she added sweetly.

The space now closed between them, Vanessa could feel the tension in her body growing as her eyes stayed locked on his lips. She had been thinking about it all night and was practically holding her breath waiting for the moment. “I
.” Vanessa’s voice’s attempted before being cut off my his lips. Her small frame wrapped into his arms, Vanessa felt like air being lifted in spirit. Vanessa’s face an obvious flush of red as she pulled away slowly, but still only inches from his lips. “Then I’ll be there.”

image

He watched her face fall at his words, furrowing his brows in slight confusion. “I like that about you, it’s not a bad thing. The other girls work to hard to get the teams attention, in anyway they can, it’s exhausting. Not knowing what reason they’re talking to you for, or why they’re with us.” He spoke, a soft smile on his lips, “I like the fact you aren’t just throwing yourself into us and into our lives, it’s refreshing. It’s honest,”

Dallas watched her movements, having noticed the piece of hair himself. “I will gladly oblige, and maybe take you up on those waffles. Cheat day of you will,” he sent a wink to her with a small laugh.

He had finally got to kiss her, something he admittedly had thought about more times than just in this room. Holding her gently as he pulled her closer, gently melting into the kiss before she pulled away. He acknowledged the light tint in her cheeks, his eyes immediately finding hers as she spoke, “I’m very glad to hear that,”

“I prefer your mouth closed,” Luke rolled off his tongue in indifference. It wasn’t a secret that Luke wasn’t the most progressive thinking when it came to women, but he what he lacked in nuisance he made up in treatment. In the same way he thought of women traditionally, he understood his role as a man traditionally as well. He only nodded, reaching besides here and purposely brushing his hands against her bare thigh to get passenger door holder. “Uppers, downers
I know a guy.” He let the small cigar holder he was reaching for fall into Lia’s lap before starting up the road. “And what am I supposed to think? You listen to hardcore  rap or punk?”

image

“But there’s no fun in that,” she pouted, rolling her eyes. Slowly realizing it was gonna be a bigger effort on her part to get what she wanted. Luckily for her she was able to play up the innocent but not so innocent card well, in more ways than one. Knowing that different guys wanted different things, she learned ways to adapt to the different types of people. Watching his hand move across her thigh, the slight brush bringing a small warmth to her. Inspecting the case that was placed on her lap for a moment, “I know a few guys, don’t like keeping all my business in one place,” she shrugged, popping it open and a smile tugging to her lips. “The All American has a dirty little secret, love to see it,” Before finally going to her phone and clicking shuffle play on her playlist, “I listen to a little bit of everything honestly, but certain artists I only prefer few or limited songs,”

“Whatever my favorite is?” Vanessa called out, pushing the hoop ear ring through her ear. Her heels clacked on the tile as she moved through her room to the open area. It was their new normal. Long away from the days of silent family dinners with their father at the hem going on about Kai’s obnoxious pink hair and Vanessa even obnoxious-er boyfriends. But now they two sitcom watching siblings, who smiled while passing and acknowledging their existences. “You know I work tonight?” she shook her head, looking through the food bags.

“I feel like when we were younger it was different but either way I know what you like, and what I’d get fought for getting you,” He chuckled, nudging her out of the way lightly and separating the items into the counter. “the calendar on the fridge helps me keep track, I figured you could eat before work or bring it with you. Or even have something to look forward to when you get out,” he shrugged, “I was craving Chinese so I thought why not get Nessie some,”
