The brainworms struck. Trans man! Bella swan.
He probably figures it out before moving back to Forks and has a moment where he chops off all his hair in a mental break down and his mom (parentification Queen over here omg) doesn’t know how to handle being the one doing the comforting for a change, so that’s part of the reason she sends him away. She’s supportive, but only from a distance.
Then there’s Charlie. He probably feels so guilty at first for being so happy he finally has a son that he doesn’t really know how to interact with his newly-minted son, without even beginning to address the fact that this child has grown so much since he’s last seen him. Like there’s already so much going on in the way of “oh we don’t really know each other as parent and child” that Charlie takes maybe about two to three weeks to even begin to address his son’s very obvious mental issues caused by his ex-wife, let alone the way his son’s life crumbled and re-built itself when he realized he was trans. I think it’d culminate in Charlie taking his son fishing, only for both of them to accept that this is not a good bonding activity and for them to spend the time having an impromptu picnic instead
oh and you know Carlisle had him clocked the minute he walked in. Like sure Forks is a small town but Carlisle’s been a doctor long enough for him to write prescriptions for HRT like. He knew. And he was fully ready to just.. give him a prescription for testosterone if he asked. I get the feeling that Esme would be one of those allies who just.. straight up don’t see trans people as anything other than what they identify as. Like, as in, she doesn’t think about the fact that t-boy swan here would still have periods and have to bind. She overhears swan asking for a pad from Alice and for a full day she gushes about how sweet the swan boy is, that he looks out for his female friends by getting them tampons, then it hits her in the middle of like doing the dishes.
Edward is a curious case. I feel like on one hand he’d be a little confused (sheltered white boy from the 1800s) but then on the other I just don’t think he’d like.. ask? Like he fully accepts his boyfriend as a man but the first time they have sex he just pauses for a split second after they get their clothes off and then immediately resumes. Like he would probably just accept that the discrepancy between swan’s presentation and genitals is just something that happens to modern people now. Like with “oops all berries” cereal or the happy accident that made a lot of modern baked goods so good. Idk I just… t-boy swan…

Also. I have to mention the fact that the enforcers don’t HAVE to parallel cops specifically. They’re “enforcers”. Look back in history to any violent regime and you’ll find more parallels between the enforcers and them.
they’re not just cops- they’re the idea of violence carried out via the government, and that’s never been a North American specific issue.
"Stop projecting your America-centric view of cops onto the enforcers in Arcane!" as if the very first shot in season 1 isn't a bloodbath with Vi and Powder's parents having been murdered by enforcers, as if we don't witness multiple violations of their power in season 2 and as if police brutality isn't a global issue.
ignoring the conversation about tori woods being arrested because there’s more to talk about than just that,
I hope people (specifically dark romance lovers and defenders specifically) start to see just why others have such a hard time swallowing dark romance being mainstream. Because all the rest of us see is a race to the bottom with no care about HOW to present these topics to a wide audience.
it’s not just her dad’s friend, it’s her dads older friend in his thirties ;) no no wait it’s not her dad’s friend it’s her uncle!! And she’s barely legal!! No wait!!! It’s her cousin AND her uncle and they act possessive! No it’s a stalker! And he doesn’t care about her consent! It’s her step brother!! And she’s underage!! No wait-
She was groomed. She was assaulted. She was abused.
I fully understand the point of using this sort of fiction to cope with painful trauma, I’ve even done the same thing. But after a point it is reckless to contribute to the romanticism of abuse, especially to young girls and to a wider extent AFABs and feminine presenting people. You may be gaining a helpful perspective or healing but what happens when another abuser gets their hands on this material and uses it to manipulate another victim? What happens when someone impressionable (young and impressionable are not the same, elders are often impressionable, stop muddying the conversation by bringing up that “teens shouldn’t be reading this anyway” because it doesn’t matter) reads this and it only reassures them that their current abusive situation is okay? Hell, booktok had been openly listing over a REAL 16 year old boy and suggested he read a book with romanticized rape in it.
this issue goes beyond dark romance but it is most prevalent in dark romance because everyone for it and against it has a trigger finger for attacking anyone who says something they don’t like. I’m hoping that this doesn’t fall on deaf ears and this can help a conversation to be had. Because this conversation has needed to happen but everyone has been too stubborn to even begin.
So as a brain worm for you to think about because I can’t find my own answers to these questions yet:
What dark romance is good? Does the genre require more restriction? What is a respectful way to portray the topics often used in dark romance? At what point should the publishers/publishing company be held responsible for any harm done by the book? Does the use for survivors to cope outweigh the possibility victims created by romanticized abuse?
I found my phone and I’m definitely writing down my passwords so I don’t get locked out of literally everything again
phone inaccessible I feel like I'm losing it

Hi Stuckies, I need your help with a Florida problem. At the end of this post, I am going to ask you to sign a petition. But first, let me explain why! If you have read my fic Operation: Gros Michel, you may remember a scene where a teacher gets fired for mentioning a same-sex partner, which is a violation of Florida's "Don't Say Gay" laws. The students then organize a protest, and Steve and Bucky show up to help them out.
Something very similar just happened for real, in my home town--and ironically, it happened in the town and at the exact school where the fic takes place. When I wrote that fic, I was thinking a lot about the harm that was likely to come from all of the new homophobic, fascist laws that have been passed to restrict queer identity in Floridian classrooms. I am sad and angry--but also not surprised--that something very, very similar to what I wrote about in that fic has now happened in real life.
(Kind of ironic that it happened at the high school from the fic, of all places, though.)
Last week, a teacher at Satellite High School, my alma mater, was fired for using a student's preferred name and pronouns in the classroom. This is illegal in Florida without permission from parents. The exact details have not been reported, but word on the street is that this student is a young trans kid, whose parents are not supportive. Having a validating and supportive teacher must have felt like such a life raft to that kid, and it hurts my heart to think this student and the teacher are now being punished for it. The teacher was fired after the parents complained, because under Florida law, teachers are not allowed to show that kind of respect or basic decency to their students. The "Don't Say Gay" law from 2023 specifically bars teachers from using anything other than a student's 'birth name', unless they get a permission slip signed by the parents. If you think that through, it's blatantly ridiculous and I would be willing to bet the law is broken in every Floridian classroom, every day. Every time a teacher calls a kid "Mike" instead of "Michael", or "Jess" instead of "Jessica", they are breaking the law. But no one gets punished for that, because, obviously, this was written to target trans students and the teachers who support them.
Yes, this teacher broke the law. But this is a deeply unjust, targeted, and immoral law--and it should be broken. This teacher looked that unjust law in the face, and she stood up to it--with kindness and respect for her student. She stood up.
So I am asking for your help.
There is a petition to have her contract reinstated. I believe this petition was started by students at the school. And just like in the fic I wrote? The kids are organizing. This community leans pretty red and there is a lot of homophobia, so for these kids to come out and protest is particularly brave. Lots of people have been speaking at local school board meetings, including a lot of students. There was a community protest in support of this teacher, with students and their parents. And--just like in the fic--the students have planned a school walk-out. But unlike in the fic, they won't have Steve and Bucky to back them up. I am hoping some of you might be willing to send some of that Captain America energy to this cause.
Here is the petition. It would mean so much to me if you would sign it, and share this around. The more people who know about this, the better. And here are a few local news articles if you want to learn more about what's going on.
The worms were caused by this specific drawing. I meant for it to be normal fanart but halfway through the idea struck of "what if Bella were actually trans" and then this was birthed.
Made using Krita, with a pencil brush for line art, and chalk brush for that delicious chunky lighting I've grown so fond of. I wanted to try and make this a really easy piece by being a little more cartoonish in my proportions (bigger eyes, fluffy hair, cutesy poses) and it worked really well. While my Ripple AU captain took about a week working on it a little at a time while constantly referencing pictures of Chris Evans, this took only a day. From start to finish it was maybe only five hours?
