Sparrows. In the Bible it says, “The sparrow will not fall to the ground, not even a sparrow, without God knowing.” He feels every death. I was in South America, in my youth, on a mission, and I stood beneath this… great waterfall. The scale of it. The weight of it… The roar of it, it drowned out every noise in the jungle. Every bird and every voice. And then when I was older, I thought about death, how many deaths occur every second… There’s people, animals, sparrows. If every drop of water in that waterfall were a death, I thought, “Oh. That must be what it’s like for God.” Every moment of every hour of every day, a deluge of death, so loud, how could he hear my whispered prayers over that thundering roar of deaths?

Our whole lives have been wasted, just staring across the church. Too scared to come down and be with you. Too scared to tell our own daughter the truth. And it never felt like a sin, that was the thing. You never felt like a sin, and our daughter, she was never a sin.

There’s this verse in the Bible, just kind of stuck with me. “He makes the sun rise on the evil and the good.”

Y’all know how truly devastating it would be to have a child you love but can never have a relationship with because your daughter is the result of an affair and you’re a fcking priest so it’s not like you can just drop everything. and slowly over time your mind fails you until one day by chance you get lost in Israel and come across what your mind hopes is an ANgeL that fcking exsanguinates you but then very kindly gives you its own blood in return that makes you young again. so naturally you package this thing up with bubble wrap and bring it home to revitalize your ailing lover as well as help out the failing community you served for decades ONLY for everything possible to go wrong and your daughter is murdered in front of you and all you end up gaining in the end is a short while to sit with the love of your youth and hold your dead child in your lap while you wait to die.

The thing that intrigues me most about john and mildred is that he transforms into a COMPLETELY different person when he is talking to her. He's awkward and giggly and emotional and pathetic and sad...he just wears every single emotion on his sleeve with her. He's not a commanding presence anymore he is just completely raw and torn open. That and the way they seem to be so physically comfortable with each other makes me think their affair must have been a years long thing...

Meemaw and peepaw pls reveal your secrets to me.. I must know...
