CW: none, Raiden’s mini chapter

AN: sorry for the late chapter, college lmaooooo

All this changing back and forth from the realms is weird. You thought to yourself. As you all step foot back into Wu Shit, it is dark. It was 3:00 pm back in Outworld. I’m not going to be able to sleep. You sigh in mental exhaustion. Even though you yourself hadn’t fought anyone, the events of everything in the last 24 hours were crazy enough to wear you out.

You all give your last praises to Raiden before you all go to your rooms. You stretch your arms outward, walking through the quiet corridors to your room. You feel as though you’ve been wearing the same clothes for too long. The heat in Outworld was also pretty bad.

You make your way to the bathroom attached to your room, you grab some clothes from your dresser on the way. Setting your clothes on the sink counter, you start the shower water. You put your hand under the faucet, making sure it’s at the right temperature.

Once you decide it was warm enough, you undress and step into the awaiting water. You let out a sigh of pleasure as the warm water ran across your skin, soothing your sore muscles. Feeling the dirt and stress of the tournament wash away.

As you wash yourself, your mind wanders to the dreams you’ve been having. How you used to smile with your first friend. The bracelet on your arm a reminder that you would always be there for each other. You frown. Always be there for eachother. Dairou. You can’t help but think about where he is now. If you would ever see him again.

You scrub the downcast thoughts from your mind as you let your nails massage your scalp. Once you’ve finished in the shower, you dry yourself off and get dressed. You decide to wind down with a nice book. You pick out the novel of your choice from your shelf. You get comfy on your chair and pull a blanket up on your lap.

After a few pages, you decide you want some tea while you read. You put your bookmark on the page and set the book off to the side. You make your way out of your room, quietly down the halls toward the kitchen. You expected to be alone when you arrived at the kitchen, but to your surprise, you saw Raiden. It might be dark, but you can still make out his form in front of the stove top.

“It seems we both had the same idea.” You softly say, catching his attention. You turn on a small light. You see Raiden’s gentle smile as you walk toward the cabinet, grabbing your own mug. “Can you pour me a cup?” He nods and grabs the kettle to pour the boiling water in both your glasses.

“So, what are you doing up so late?” He asks as you both sit down at the table for a little chat. “I could ask you the same thing,” you remark. “I couldn’t sleep just yet. Too much excitement.” Hearing him chuckle, you knew he was the same way this evening.

“Yeah, I thought I would have been able to sleep, but I couldn’t manage.” He takes a small sip of his beverage. You stare at your glass, the dark colored liquid swirling around mesmerizing you.

“What was it like?” He stares at you, confused. You continue, “To battle those in Outworld.” He sets his cup down. “It was quite the challenge. Each fighter was incredibly skilled. Though, there were times I. . .” You gaze at him as he thinks about his next words. “I thought I was going to lose.”

This answer somewhat surprised you. You knew Raiden was a very strong fighter, he won the tournament to prove it. But you knew he was human like the rest of you, he had his doubts. He was not the oh so cocky Kung Lao or Johnny Cage. He was modest to a fault.

“Why did you think you were going to lose?” You ask. He seems contemplative. Like he is unsure himself why he thought that. “Everyone that I went up against had years on me. They had far more fighting experience than me, and I thought I wouldn’t be good enough to beat them,” he takes another sip of tea before continuing. “But I knew I had to win, to protect Earthrealm.”

You sigh at his answer. Why does everyone feel that they must shoulder the weight of the world? “Raiden, you might be Earthrealm’s champion, but you don’t need to shoulder the burden of protecting us all by yourself. In no lifetime, this one or the next, would we ever be disappointed in you needing us to help you.”

He seems to be staring at you, still registering your words. You tack on, “We’ve had each other's backs since day one, and we still do.” He seems to relax a little at your words of affirmation.

“I just thought people expected so much of me, that I had to be strong. That I had to do everything myself.” You put a hand over his comfortingly, “Rai, if I had known that being champion stressed you out so much, we could have chatted over tea a long time ago.” You chuckle, releasing his hand.

He lets out a small laugh with you, “I suppose you’re right. Thank you for letting me talk.”

“It’s absolutely no trouble, we can talk anytime you’d like.” As you finish your drink, you walk over to the sink to wash it and turn it over to let it dry. Raiden trails behind you to do the same. As you turn to return to your bedroom, you spot a figure with glowing eyes in the doorway.

“Lord Liu Kang,” you both bow, “We were just heading off to bed now.”

He looks at you both with a relaxed expression, but you can also see that he has something on his mind.

Sending this, you speak up. “Is there something you needed to say to us, Lord Liu Kang?” He lets out a small sigh, a small glimpse into the stress that plagues him.

“You never fail to read my mind.” His expression falls back into a more serious one. “Yes, if you would both sit back down, please.”

You and Raiden take your seats, somewhat anxious to know what he has to say.

“Y/N, I must send you and the others on a mission in Outworld. This will be dangerous, perhaps your biggest challenge yet. I need you to find a powerful sorcerer that may be corrupting the Royal House of Outworld from the inside.”

“How dangerous is this spellcaster? Surely he couldn’t be dangerous enough that you would need to send all of us?” You try to make light of the impending mission, but the look from Liu Kang says all you need to know. Extremely dangerous.

“With all five of us there, then I’m sure we will be fine.” You look confidently toward Raiden. “We will do just fine, Lord Liu Kang.” He agrees.

Liu Kang looked downward for only a moment, “Raiden, you will stay here.”

Well, you can’t say you were expecting that answer. “What? Why wouldn’t Raiden come with us?” You question. “Surely, our chances of success would be greater if he came with us.”

Raiden put a gentle hand on your shoulder. “I’m sure Lord Liu Kang has good reason to make me stay. Let him explain before we jump to conclusions.” You calm down, and nod for him to continue. “Due to the Tournament, Raiden has become a popular face to those in Outworld. He would be too recognizable. The mission I am entrusting to you is one that requires your utmost discretion.”

You still look nervous. Liu Kang reaches across the table to put his hand over yours. His gaze is soft, but stern. “Y/N, you have been my student for many years. You have exceeded my greatest expectations for you, and you still continue to prove that you are strong,” your heart lightens at his words, not realizing how much you needed to hear them. “I believe that you and the others can accomplish this mission I’m giving you.”

The words he spoke seemed to have robbed you of yours. Those words hung in the air, permeating your mind. You steeled your nerves. “Lord Liu Kang, I will do everything in my power to make sure we succeed in our mission.” He looked pleased with your answer, “I won’t let you down.” Those words were perhaps more personal than you had intended, but he responded all the same.

You feel a little overwhelmed at the prospect of going on a dangerous mission. However, you mostly feel tired as you’ve stayed up all night. You go to leave and put you cup by the sink, Raiden following suit. As you leave the dining room, you swear you hear Lord Liu Kang say something.

“I know you won’t.”

Havik x Reader Ch. 1.5

(Side plot where we actually interact with other characters)

CW: sad Kung Lao, that’s about it lmao

WC: 1855

A/N: actual second chapter next week tehe💖

Your mind is racing with too many thoughts to comprehend at once. You feel overwhelmed. Why? Because you leave for Outworld tomorrow morning. The stress of preparation has kept you up all night. You have to make sure that you’ll have everything you need. . . and may not need, but there could be a situation where you need all the backup Yo-yo string you have in your drawers.

Stopping your pacing, you take a deep breath in, then out. Calm down. You still have time to double, maybe triple, check your bag. But that will come later. For now, you need to find your fellow champions. Putting a pin in your stress-packing, you leave to find the boys.

You find Johnny and Kenshi first, as they’re both in Kenshi’s room. Kenshi looks exhausted and a little annoyed. However, the reason isn’t that hard to find. Johnny is non stop talking about his Hollywood movies. You pause at the door and wait for permission to enter.

Kenshi notices you first. When Johnny sees that he isn’t listening anymore, he turns to look for the distraction. He smiles and waves you in.

“Hey! I was just talking about one of my movies. Wanna hear about it?” He smiles so wide like a kid. He really loves his own movies, doesn't he? Before you could foolishly say yes, Kenshi interrupts you. “Sure, say yes,” He deadpans. “He’ll only talk your ear off for 3 hours!” He shoots daggers at the actor with his eyes.

“Oh come on Takahashi. It’s only been about 30 minutes. At BEST!” You sense Kenshi’s growing agitation before it shows on his face. “You have been running on and on about your dumb movies since we came back from dinner at 6. It’s 9:30 now!” You finally chime in, “Johnny, I think you might need to get a watch.” He frowns, “Oh hush.”

Kenshi just sighs and Johnny starts sulking, trying to get more attention. “Anyways, did you need something?” You look at him like he grew a second head. You were so caught up in their petty squabble that you forgot why you came here. “I didn’t really need anything. I was just stressing myself out packing. I just needed to get my mind off of it. That’s all.” You shrug as the other men nod.

“Well I would have been packed a long time ago if it weren’t for someone here.” Johnny feigns being offended. You stifle a laugh at their bickering. They either snicker or scoff at you finding amusement in the situation at hand. When Kenshi shoots up from his bed to point fingers into Johnny’s chest is when you decide to intervene.

You whip out Reaper from your short’s pocket. Giving it a few spins you throw the yo-yo in their direction. You watch in delight as Reaper wraps around the two, tying them together. Johnny loses his balance and falls forward with Kenshi landing on top of him.

Johnny’s pained cry can be heard as he’s always loud. He wheezes out, “Not cool dude! Kenshi, get off. You’re squishing my beautiful face into the ground.” Kenshi squirms to attempt getting out of Reaper’s hold. “I would be faster if you would just sit still for five seconds.”

They both would have hit the other by now if they had full range of their hands. Your eyes feel wet as tears start to well up in your eyes. “GAHAH,” You doubled over. “You two should see your faces right now.” You let out a string of cackles. Your stomach hurts from roaring at the situation. All you get in return is glares from your two friends. “Untie us Y/N.” “Get him off me!” They shout in unison.

You chuckle the whole way walking over to them. You really tied them tight. It took full effort to get the string untangled. Finally getting the last loop undone, they push themselves off eachother. You skillfully recall the yo-yo back to your hand. With the looks they give you, you almost think that they’re tired of your pranks.

With that, Kenshi ushers you both out of his room. He did have to pack after hearing a whole TED Talk about Johnny’s movies. You and Johnny continuously laugh as you walk to find Raiden and he walks to his room. Probably to pack at least three more hand mirrors.

As you head down the halls of the Wu Shi, you feel more relaxed. You quickly find Raiden’s room as you are all grouped close together. You knock gently on the door. You hear soft footsteps coming to the door as he slides it open. He was surprised to see you but welcomed you in.

“Hey Raiden,” You plop down on a chair in his room. “How’s packing going for you?” He sits on his bed not too far from you. “I was done packing earlier this morning. I’ll take it that everyone else isn’t done?” He chuckles slightly. “I might be avoiding mine and Kenshi had an unfair distraction.” You look at him but Raiden gives you a confused look. “Johnny was said unfair distraction. Let’s be thankful that we didn’t have to hear about his movies for three hours.” You grimace. Raiden only has a baffled expression on his face.

“Three hours? I knew Johnny could talk endlessly, but I’m surprised Kenshi put up with it that long.” He smiles as he removes his hat to put it on the nightstand. “I totally thought Kenshi was gonna hit him after I tied them together,” The mental image in your head makes you snort. “Raiden, are you ready for tomorrow?”

He looks up at that question, then looks away sheepishly. “I don’t know. I’m nervous that I won’t be the champion Lord Liu Kang wants me to be.” His hand rubs the back of his neck. “Rai, you’ll be fine. You were chosen for a reason.” You smile softly at him and he relaxes a little. Standing from your seat, you move over to the bed and put your hand on the man’s shoulder.

“Whatever you could possibly lack in strength, you make up for in heart.” He looks directly at you hearing those words. You seem to have struck a chord in his mind as he looks more assured than before. “You give me too much praise. Thank you, I will not let you guys down.” “Atta boy, that’s the spirit. Now I have to go. I still need to find Lao. Good night Raiden.” “Good night.” He waves you off as you leave and close his door.

Honestly, it feels like you haven’t seen Kung lao since breakfast this morning. We had the day off to relax before the tournament. Thank the Gods for that. You make your way to Kung Lao’s room with ease, however, you make a quick detour to the kitchen to grab some chips. You two play games and have snacks together often, so you know his favorite kind of treats.

You knock on the door, “Hey Lao, you in there? I have snacks.” You hope the snacks will get him to run to the door. Nothing. That’s weird. He never refuses snacks. You knock again, and after no response you think he must be asleep. You turn to leave, before you hear the door creek open. You turn around only to be met with a disheveled Lao.

Your face drops to worry and you open the door farther to see the mess his room is. “Lao? What’s wrong, what happened?” You put the bag of chips aside and move him back to sit on his bed. He wipes away the remnants of his tear streaked face. Sniffling, “You brought snacks?” You pause, that's what he wants after crying? Makes sense. You retrieve the chip bag and open it, leaning the bag toward him.

He takes a chip, and eats it. He stiffens as he feels your hand caress his back. “You can tell me what’s wrong. I want to help you.” He keeps his head low, not wanting to make eye contact. “I just– It’s that,” He calms himself with a deep breath. “I’m jealous of Raiden, and I hate that I feel this way because he’s my best friend.” You're shocked at his response. He is so carefree. You never thought anything got to him. “Can you tell me why you’re jealous?”

He looks at you like he might start crying again. “It’s because. . . he got the title of champion and I didn’t. I’m so happy and proud of him. But I just wish that it was me. I carry the name of the Great Kung Lao. How am I supposed to honor that name if I wasn’t even good enough to be champion?” Your heart breaks for your friend at his confession.

You rub circles into his back to give him some comfort. He pushes his face into his hands. “I’m such a horrible friend.” That takes you aback. He is nothing of the sort and you will let him know, right now. “Kung Lao, you are not a horrible friend. You’ve always been there when we needed you.”

He sniffles, “Really?” You smile, “Yes of course. And being jealous doesn’t make you a bad person. Everyone gets jealous, it’s a part of being human. What makes me so proud of you is that you can recognize those feelings, and not let them get the best of you. That takes being a great friend to do.”

You thought that he couldn’t hug you tighter in that moment than when you said, “Your ancestors would be proud of you Lao.” You probably felt a rib pop but this is fine. When he lets go he wipes the tears from his eyes.

He looks at you, “And what about you? You don’t feel jealous that Raiden is the champion and you didn’t get a chance to compete?” Your heart pounded. “You know I’ve waited almost my whole life for the tournament. Despite how badly I wanted to participate, I knew I wouldn’t be able to. I’m not from Earthrealm, but it is my home.”

“Does that not hurt?” “Of course it doesn’t, but I’ve made my peace with it. Regardless if I was born here or not, home is what we make it, not where we come from.”

“Thank you Y/N. You’re the best. Now. . . Are you gonna eat the rest of the chips?” You both burst out laughing at how he still thinks with his stomach. “No, you can have them. And if anyone asks I’ll blame Johnny. Now get some sleep, Champion of Friends, we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow. Goodnight.” “Goodnight.”

He covers himself up with the blanket, but you still hear him crunching on his chips. He won’t be going to be soon. You chuckle to yourself at how many crumbs will be in his bed by morning.

You’re exhausted, but that doesn’t change how excited you are for the tournament tomorrow. You swear the moment you hit the bed you’ll pass out. And that you did. . .

Khaotic Turn of Events

Havik x reader (part 2)

CW: poorly written fight scenes, Shao and Reiko being mean,

WC: 4989

AN:

The night was calm in Seido. Air was warm, but the breeze made it nice. The grass was smooth beneath you where you sat. The coarse dirt on your hands was a comfort you frequently enjoyed. You felt at peace as you watched the sun set on the capitol city.

But you weren’t alone. No. You had your best friend next to you.

He sat next to you, watching the same sunset. Hand inching toward yours. You tore your eyes from the wonder of nature on the horizon to set them upon your friend. Noticing his hand almost touching yours, you smiled at him.

He gazed at you, adoration prevalent in his eyes. You knew he wanted to hold your hand, he always does. He finds solace in your touch. You however, don’t enjoy beating around the bush.

You scoop his hand in yours and grasp it tight. Shocked at your bold move, he freezes. A blush is evident on his face in the following moments. You smile at how shy he becomes around you. He is a wild child after all. Though, you do love seeing this soft side of him.

He pulls his hand away and turns his head. He’s embarrassed, but you’ll have none of that. You decide the best way to handle the situation is simple: tackle him.

You jump on top of him and you two roll around in the dirt. He was caught off guard, but that doesn’t mean his reflexes are slow. He quickly gains the upper hand on you, having done this multiple times.

This time, however, you kicked him off. You laughed as he rolled off you. You could hear him cackle loudly too. Both of you lay flat on your backs next to the other as you gaze toward the sky. The heavy saturations of pinks, blues, and purples was a sight you wished you could see forever.

“Hey, I have something for you.” He finally breaks the silence. Your turn to face him, curious. You both sit up as he digs something out of his pocket. He holds the small object up to you. You let out a gasp of surprise at the handcrafted yo-yo he gave to you.

“Oh Rou, I love it.” The joy you felt could not be contained. As such, you ran up to the unsuspecting boy and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek. “I’ll treasure it forever.” You admired the trinket and gave it a few spins. What you didn’t see was that he had a big smile on his face. How his gaze softened when he saw the joy on your face. You didn’t feel how fast his heart beat around you.

DONG DING DONG

You both turn your heads at the sound. “Oh shoot! I forgot about curfew again.” You quickly start to gather your things, putting the new yo-yo in your pocket. He hands you your coat that was flung off somewhere earlier. “Thanks. I’ll be sure to hang out with you again soon, ok?” He waved you off as you ran down the hill to get home. Your parents will be mad at you for forgetting curfew again.

He couldn’t wait for the next time he’d see you. And you couldn’t either.

——————————————

This is it. This is what you’ve prepared for for years. You are all gathered at the gateway arch as you watch the magic unfurl from Liu Kang’s hands. You have seen him do this a thousand times, but it still leaves you in awe to watch him open a portal. The fire from him, manifesting into a swirling, circular pathway to the tournament ahead.

“Outworld can be both alien and intoxicating to Earthrealmers. Do not become drawn in.” Liu Kang begins. “You must focus on the task at hand.” You listen to his words intently. Johnny seems to be doing the opposite as he has his phone out recording this. How on Earth he plans to make a movie from this is beyond you. You watch as Liu Kang enters the new realm without a single glance back. You force yourself to take a breath to soothe the nerves that threaten to consume you.

The five of you follow Liu Kang into the unknown. . . Not before Kenshi shoves Johnny’s phone out of his face.

The beauty of Outworld is indescribable. You walk beside Kenshi and Johnny, the latter of which is still recording. “Toto, I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.” He looks so happy at his references you don’t have it in you to tell him to shut up right now. “Oh my.”

You hear Johnny say, you turn your head in his direction. You see two stunning women lined up with guards at the top of the staircase. “Oh my, indeed.” You agree. “Are those. . .” He trails off, waiting for Liu Kang's confirmation.

He turns to answer, “Empress Sindel’s daughters, yes.” Johnny looks pleased by that answer. “They do not disappoint.” You shoot Johnny a warning glance as you elbow him in the side. He rolls his eyes and continues recording the illustrious Outworld.

Johnny looks smug with himself before Raiden shoots him down. “We are Earthrealm’s ambassadors, Johnny. We’ll show them respect. Not unwanted attention.” You and the others nod your head in agreement. Johnny just over exaggerates a wink.

You finally arrive before the stairs before the princesses of Outworld. Liu Kang bows in reverence, and you all follow suit. The lady in pink speaks first.

“Lord Liu Kang, welcome.” “Thank you Princess Mileena.” She looks pleased. “You remember my sister?” She nods her head toward the woman in blue beside her. You know Liu Kang never forgets anyone. “Of course. Princess Kitana.” Kitana nods her head in confirmation.

Liu Kang then introduces you. “May I introduce Johnny Cage, Kung Lao, Y/N, Kenshi Takehashi, and Earthrealm’s champion, Raiden.” Each one of you nods in acknowledgement as your name is called.

Your attention is diverted when you hear Kitana speak. “I hope you’re prepared, Raiden. Our champions are determined to win.” You look at Raiden, trying to reassure him. He has a strong look on his face. You know he’ll do just fine.

“None more so than me,” It's Mileena’s turn to speak. “It’s been too long since we’ve known victory.”

“Princess Mileena,” The yellow suited guard cuts in. “We should be on our way. Empress Sindel awaits.” “Thank you Tanya,” She motions for you all to come with her. “Follow me please.”

You ascend the stairs and follow Mileena to the grand carts that will lead to your next location. You find yourself in the wagon with Kitana, Kenshi, Kung Lao, and Johnny Cage. Raiden and Lord Liu Kang were with Mileena in the first carriage.

“The festival looks so lively,” You begin. “I’ve never seen anything like it. You gaze into the streets. There were banners strung across every street corner, all in flashy, vibrant colors. All the shops and food carts. What you would give to be able to try the food here.

It seems Kung Lao had the same thought as he was eyeing a particular cart selling what looked like kebabs. “Hungry already, Lao?” You elbow him in the arm to snap him out of his hunger haze.

“What? I didn’t eat that much this morning.” He crosses his arms defensively. This brought out a stark laugh from Johnny and Kenshi. “Not that much?” Johnny begins. “You eat more than all of us combined.” “Do not!” “Kung Lao, we’re kidding,” you look out at the guard walking in line next to the carriage. “Well, I am kidding. They’re probably not.” He snaps his head in your direction to glare at you.

“I’m serious, you’re always hungry.” Kensh says. “Sorry bro, them’s the breaks.” Kung Lao punches Johnny in the arm. “Ouch!” Lao goes for a weak punch to his face. “Hey, not the face!” You and Kenshi just stare at their childish fight. “Wow. . .” Kitana says.

“You’ll have to forgive them Princess. This happens frequently to prevent it.” You plead your case. “This is quite entertaining. It’s not often I see two people slap-fight before my eyes.” She nods to the boys and they are, in fact, slap-fighting now. You sit there like a disappointed parent and Kenshi wishes he was in the other carriage.

The carts suddenly stop. Everyone looks at each other confused. You and Kitana peer out the side to look ahead of the crowd. You see Princess Mileena hurriedly rush up to speak to a lady in purple.

“Who is that?” You ask Kitana. “That would be the First Constable, Li Mei.” She looks confused. “Though, I am unsure why she is out in the middle of the street now. I’ll have to ask my sister later.” Annoyed is not adequate to describe the look on Mileena’s face as she goes back into the carriage. Your ride to the palace is quiet from this point on.

You stand inside the palace waiting for the first fight of the tournament to begin. You notice that Raiden is nervous. You want to help him, but you have no idea what to say that would calm his nerves. Lucky for you, Liu Kang knows what to say.

“Worry expends energy for no purpose, Raiden.” Liu Kang is as calm as ever. Raiden, however, looks stressed out of his mind. “But the tournament. If I lose–” “Focus on your actions, not the outcome.” The fire wielder cuts him off. “It is all you can control.”

It was then that a large man with horns entered the room. His presence is almost bigger than the man himself.

“Red alert.” Johnny chimes in. “Incoming stock villain.” You barely manage to hold your snort back.

“General Shao. Do not let him goad you.” Liu Kang informs you all of the man that now stands before you. Much to your surprise, the general laughs in your faces.

“Is it me, or is Earthrealm’s champion scrawnier than usual?” The general sneers.

You tried to hold Kung Lao back, but he stepped up to Shao. “Would you care to test his strength? Raiden will–” “Will prove himself soon enough.” Liu Kang cuts in before Lao can say something he will regret. The general looks down at Liu Kang. “Have you still not told most Earthrealmers that Outworld exists?”

Your Lord does not falter, “It is safer that way, General.” The General takes a tone of arrogance. “I suppose so. Your people’s frail minds couldn’t handle the truth.” Although you are not from Earthrealm, you hate the way Shao speaks about your home. Now it’s Lao’s turn to hold you back.

“You presume them frail, General?” He stands his ground. “Should you. . . given how frequently they win this tournament?” The General does not like his words. “We will destroy your champion, Liu Kang. He will taste no victory.” He storms off to take his place next to the three thrones at the end of the room.

Trumpets blare loudly to announce the arrival of the Empress and her daughters. You all turn to the entrance of the grand hall. Empress Sindel strides in with Princess Mileena and Kitana at her sides behind her. They walk with such grace and power it sends a shiver down your spine.

Sindel takes her seat on the grand throne in the center, while Mileena sits to her left and Kitana on her right.

“Welcome, members of the royal home.” Her voice booms over the crowd. “Welcome, our esteemed Earthrealm guests. We gather here again to honor my late husband’s legacy. To continue the tournament that he founded with Lord Liu Kang in hopes that it would foster peace among realms.” She looks pained to give this speech even long after Jerrod’s death. “May Jerrod’s soul watch over us with pride from its resting place in the Living Forest.”

“Lord Liu Kang,” She looks upon him.

“Empress Sindel.” He returns her call. “It pleases me to once again be your guest. He bows to her.

“Here, you are always welcome.” She crosses her leg. “Now, let us meet your champion.”

Earthrealm’s champion is Raiden, Your Majesty.” Liu Kang steps out of the way, gesturing to Raiden.

This came as a shock to the Empress. Liu Kang has mentioned you a few times during meetings in years past. He was proud of you, yes, but the champion not being you surprised her.

The god continues on, “He has earned his place by embodying the very best qualities of Earthrealm’s people.”

She turned to assess the oncoming challenger. “You seem nervous, young man.”

“I’m a stranger in an unfamiliar land. Here to compete against its greatest fighters. Yes, I am nervous.” Raiden was almost blunt with his response. Maybe your and Lao’s sarcasm has finally worn off on him.

“As you should be.” Sindel states simply. “You have a difficult path ahead.” She stands tall from her throne, “It has begun!”

You hear footsteps sound from the back of the room. What is seen is Li Mei walking in to meet her challenger.

“As tradition requires, Outworld’s initial competitor will be Sun Do’s First Constable. Li Mei.” She walks up to the Empress. “May she defend our realm’s glory as well as she preserves our capital’s order.”

Li Mei proudly responds to her ruler, “Your Majesty, I will honor both the royal house, and all of Outworld, with my kombat. She puts her right fist over her heart to salute her queen, descending the stairs to meet her.

Empress Sindel reaches out to her, with a soft gaze on her face. You can’t quite make out the next words she says to her First Constable. But, whatever words they were, Li Mei looked dejected to hear them. At that, Sindel returns to her seat as Li Mei turns toward Raiden.

“All you need do is your best. The rest will take care of itself.” Liu Kang puts the same reassuring hand on Raiden’s shoulder. Only this time, the recipient is pleased to hear the words spoken.

Raiden looks reassured. “Yes, Lord Liu Kang.” With that, Liu Kang steps off to the side to reveal Li Mei in front of him.

“Shall we see what you can do?” She asks rhetorically. Raiden is undeterred. “Hopefully, this is the first of many victories.” “I will prevail, Earthrealmer. This fight is more important to me than you could ever know.”

You and your fellow champions all watch in painful anticipation. You have your faith in Raiden. You look to your side and Kung Lao has nothing but certainty in his eyes. It seems like you’re not the only one with complete trust in his abilities. You are happy your talk got through to him.

The fight begins as Raiden and Li Mei trade basic kombat blows to get a feel for the action. You are not worried until Li Mei hits him with a purple burst of energy that sends him back a few steps.

You realize Raiden has only had his amulet for a short time, you’re not sure how well he can use it.” Your concern is quickly shaken when Raiden hits her with his own energy. He shoots balls of lightning from his palm in sets of threes. Raiden is able to get off a few more blasts before Li Mei charges him with magic and a rapid series of punches.

She sets up a lanturn before sending her Lion after him. He quickly sets up an electrical force field to deflect. Li Mei tries to get another attack on him but gets caught in his electric trap. She is thrown into the air and back away from him. She goes falling back to the other side of the room. When she tried to stand, she couldn’t. Thus, Raiden won his first battle.

“Thank you for the match, First Constable.” He warmly regards. She looks utterly crestfallen. But she swallows her shame and bows before the champion. Before anyone could say anything to her, she stalks quietly out of the room.

“My compliments,” The Empress begins, causing heads to turn to her. “Raiden, on a well fought match. We’ll see how you fare in the next fight.” She turns to her side. “General Shao. Whom have you chosen as our next competitor?”

The General steps up to address the crowd. “Your Majesty, I have chosen Reiko, my second in command.” Thus enters Reiko himself. “As a boy, Reiko was orphaned during the Kafallah War. Though captured, his spirit remained unbroken. He scratched, clawed, and survived.”

Johnny nudges your side, “Short, orphaned, and perpetually angry? Pick a struggle.” You have to clench your teeth to stifle the laugh that threatens to come out. You mustn't incur the wrath of the General or his second in command.

The General continues on, “After the war, I took him in. Molded him into the perfect soldier. Few others are as well versed in the art of war.” Reiko approaches and stops in front of Raiden. Now you really have to hold back your laughter with Johnny as Reiko starts punching air. You know he’s demonstrating his skills, but you can’t help but think it funny. Lao grips on to your shirt, face red from holding it in.

Reiko finishes his display with a jump, roundhouse kick. You simply couldn't hold back the small snicker that escaped you. Li Kang, without turning to look at you, smacks you on the back. You finally calm down enough to listen to Reiko speak.

“In whose army have you served? In what wars have you fought?” “I have done neither.” This answer does not please Reiko. “Then you are woefully unprepared, Earthrealmer.” He sneers in disgust as he gets into his stance. “This will be your last battlefield.”

“Does he really compare everything to war?” You whisper to Lao and Johnny. “He must, because you can hee his scowl lines.” Lao chirps. “That and his war paint looks like a goth clown.” Johnny never fails to say something so bold yet so true. Kenshi murmurs out, “Stop that, all of you three need to shut up!” You smirk, “Ok mom.” You receive ‘oohs’ from the other two beside you. You turn back to the fight.

The fight begins with Raiden trying to get the upper hand on his opponent by shooting lightning at him. Reiko, with apparent years of experience, dodges and rushes him. He grapples Raiden into a suplex and pulls him to the ground. Ouch, that had to hurt. The thunder wielder is quick to recover with a bolt of lightning straight to Reiko’s chest.

This causes him to stumble back a bit. Raiden was almost caught off guard by Reiko’s throwing stars. He was so quick you didn’t see him pull them out. However, Raiden throws up a barrier in the nick of time. Raiden flies at him, parallel to the ground, and tackles the General’s second in command. He avoids Reiko’s fists and manages to finish the fight with a strong burst of thunder from him.

You see the aftershocks remain on his body. The light blue sparks emanating off his body looked painful.

“Felled by a simple farmer.” Raiden states. He turns to face the queen. But you can also see General Shao sneer and storm off, clearly displeased by the turn of events. “I am ready for my next opponent, your Majesty. Whom shall I face?” As Raiden requests his next opponent, Reiko is seen picking himself up off the floor. His face morphed in anger as he was upset with the outcome of their fight.

“Patience, young man.” Sindel stands. “We are adjourned until first light. I hope to see you all at this evening’s banquet.” You and Lao look at each other in excitement for the delicious food tonight.

– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

The night time air feels amazing. It is cool but just warm enough you feel relaxed and refreshed. The folk music was unlike anything you have heard before. You think the singer sounds lovely. You sit next to Reiko, which isn’t exactly pleasing. It’s more awkward than anything cus he got his butt whooped earlier.

Your thoughts of peace are interrupted by Lao absolutely stuffing his face full of the chicken presented on the table. He takes a big bite out of the tender leg and washes it down with a large gulp of wine. Staring at Kung Lao’s unmannered display of eating, you see Kenshi also disgusted by him.

“What?” Lao burps out. It seems he’s genuinely curious why you’re staring at him. You grimace, “You’re gross.” He feigns offense. “How could you say that?” “She’s right, you know.” Kenshi quips. They devolve into their own argument.

You look away before you get dragged back into their squabble. You turn to Reiko, on your right. “Cool eye makeup, Reiko.” You attempt to make pleasant conversation, but it seems he did not.

“It is not makeup. It is war paint!” He states with a stern tone, almost yelling. Defensive much? Must have struck a nerve. He continues with his new found rant. “It seems Earthrealmer’s don’t understand the meaning of these markings.” He scoffs.

“Done yet? Not everything in life is about war. Seems you’ve lived a boring one if that’s all you think about.” You roll your eyes at him. He sneers like he’s about to say something until Lao shouts, “HAH! She called you boring.” You shoot him a look that says ‘stop’ before he gets you both into trouble.

“Apologies Reiko, I didn't mean to offend. I’m just making conversation.” He just brushes you off in favor of conversing with General Shao. That went well, hmm. Your attention is seized by Johnny shamelessly flirting with Kitana.

“I’m sorry, You’re 10,000 years old?” Johnny asks in stupor, “Talk about aging gracefully.” She merely shrugs in confirmation. You lean to Kung Lao, “Is he going to flirt with every lady we meet, or are guys still on the table?” He nearly chokes on his chicken at your comment. Kenshi nearly slaps him over the head.

You quiet down when you hear Empress Sindel speak. “My husband Jerrod believed that the future of our realms lay together.” She raises her glass, “Let us move forward in open dialogue. Letting no secrets tear our bonds asunder.

Everyone rises from their seats to lift their glass in toast to the evening. It is Raiden who talks first after her speech. “Your Majesty, It’s an honor to be here and to meet your people,” He looks toward everyone with a smile. “ I can already see there’s more that joins us than divides us.”

It was then you saw that General Shao wasn’t standing. He snarls a laugh before standing to interrupt. “Our peoples could not be more different, champion.” Raiden turns, confused at why he was being rude. “Excuse me?” “You heard me. Earthrealmers are devoid of all–.”

“That is enough, General.” The Empress interjects with authority. The General, annoyed evident on his face, straightened himself. “My apologies, Your Majesty. Perhaps I’ve enjoyed too much of this excellent wine. With your permission. . .”

“You may go.” At her command, he storms off. But not before breaking his chalice. Sindel looks as though he just personally offended her. He may as well have, as his actions could tarnish her reputation. She saves face, however, “Please excuse him, may the feast continue.”

An air of unease still has hold over the atmosphere of the night. Dinner goes as smoothly as possible after the General's outburst. At the night’s end, you all retreat to your chambers for much needed rest. Raiden still has eight more people to face, each more difficult than the last. . .

Morning comes and you all are up bright and early. Is there a word for interrealm ‘jet’ lag? Portal Lag? Oh well. Raiden has managed to beat every opponent he has faced yet. Honestly you're impressed by his stamina, given he’s had few breaks in between battles.

It is past what you assume to be noon, and his series of challengers draws near the end. You are gathered in the courtyard for his final tests.

“You continue to surprise, Raiden.” She begins. “Among others, you have defeated Kotal, Motaro, and Sheeva. Only two fights remain. Are you ready, Earthrealmer?

Raiden steps forward, “I am, your Majesty.” She looks neutrally pleased. “Then next, you face my daughter.” You expected to hear Mileena’s name be called but to everyone’s shock, “Kitana.” You look to see that it is, indeed, Kitana that approaches.

Liu Kang was not prepared for this, but he retains his composure. “Your Majesty, this is unprecedented.” He steps between the two opponents. “Raiden’s next opponent should be your heir.”

Sindel seems to challenge Liu Kang’s objection. “Mileena is unavailable. She’s away on pressing imperial business.” He’s at a loss here. “But I have not prepared him to battle Kitana.” Raiden and Kitana look at each other in confusion.

“He’s already demonstrated great skill. Can he not improvise?” Her patience grows thin with his persistence.

Raiden looks at Liu Kang. “Do not worry. I can do this.” He seems to accept his answer, “Very well.” He walks to his place on the sidelines, as Raiden prepares for his impromptu battle. You knew Mileena had sais as her weapon of choice, you were curious to see what Kitana had up her sleeves.

“I will be no easier to fight than my sister, Earthrealmer.” Kitana readies her stance. Raiden, ever polite, “I suffer under no such delusion, Your Highness.”

“I will win this fight. For her, my Empress, and all of Outworld.” No further conversation is had, the fight begins.

Kitana is unbelievably swift as she starts with a series of kicks and punches. Raiden dodgers and parries by sending a bolt of thunder her way. Your query from earlier is answered as she uses her bladed fans to diffuse the bolt.

She charged at him with her fans spread and swiped at him. He almost lost his foothold trying to move from the double onslaught coming at him. She did manage to get a scrape on him which caused a little blood to flow from his arm.

He hadn’t faultered at all, shocking her with his electricity. She was momentarily stunned and that was all he needed to send spheres of thunder and mass amounts of electricity at her. She couldn’t hold up against it, and she was blown away. Raiden had won the match against Princess Kitana.

You, Lao, and Johnny were hyped together to see Raiden win again. You pulled Kenshi into the hype huddle, much to his chagrin.

“You fight well princess.” “As do you, surprisingly so.” Raiden looked pleased. “I hope we meet again under different circumstances.” You are so going to poke at him for his words to the Princess.

“It’s time for the final match.” At Sindel’s words, Kitana returns to her seat at her side. “It’s a testament to your abilities that you’ve made it thus far. But now you must face General Shao.” The man himself approaches wearing his usual battle armor. Only this time, he is wearing a helmet that covers the top half of his face in a skull detail.

“Victor of Tervarian War. Conqueror of the Kuatan Plains. Defender of the Navala Coast. As has his family for generations, General Shao defends us with zeal and tenacity. All of Outworld is grateful for his service.” The Queen states with pride in her General.

“That’s a notable list of accomplishments, General.” How Raiden doesn't look the least bit nervous is beyond you. “It is a mere fraction.” He raises his battle axe into position as Raiden enters his stance. “A full recitation would take days.” If only the General were as humble as Raiden. Oh well.

The ground shakes as the general gives Raiden no time to fully catch his guard. Just how strong is that axe?! Raiden stumbles to the ground, he quickly rolls out of the way as Shao charges him and brings his weapon down hard. Raiden swings his feet up to connect a charged kick to his opponent.

Shao slams his axe to the ground again, causing the ground to quake. This throws you all off balance as you hold onto each other to stay upright. Raiden, however, was ready for this one and launched into the air. He soars with power straight at the General, making heavy-hitting contact. This throws the General to the ground, leaving him unable to battle.

“It’s over. I have done it!” Raiden looks shocked that he still stands while Shao is on the ground. Sindel stands to give her praise, “Congratulations Raiden. Earthrealm wins.” With that, The Empress, Kitana, and her entourage of onlookers leave the courtyard.

Raiden, ever the kind soul, offers his hand to The General as he struggles to stand. “May I assist you?” Shao swats his hand off. “Stay away Earthrealmer.”

“Well done,” Liu Kang starts with pride. “You have exceeded my greatest expectations.” Raiden nods in acceptance. “Thank you, Lord Liu Kang.” “Because of you, the Outworlders who would disturb the peace will once again be held at bay.” They start walking towards you four. “Come. Let us bid our hosts farewell and return to Earthrealm.”

You are serious for one moment as you bow to the tournament champion. Kung Lao runs to pat Raiden on the shoulder and you all sing your praises to Raiden. “You were so awesome!” you say first. “Well done!” Johnny next. Then Kenshi, “Very impressive!” Lastly, his best friend. “That was fantastic, Raiden. You really showed those Outworlders how it’s done.”

As you walk with your friends and mentor to give your last goodbyes to your hosts, you can’t help but feel a sense of worry. That the tournament was only the beginning. Like the worst is yet to come.

Khaotic Turn of Events

Havik x Reader Ch 1

(Slow burn Childhood friends to enemies to lovers)

CW: fight scenes (not graphically typed yet), eventual fluff/romance/smut, I’ll mark more as I post more.

Word Count: 4183

A/N: this is a reader insert into MK1 story mode/plotline. This, things might be different but that keeps it interesting :3

I also posted this to Ao3, so feel free to check it out there too!

There once was a boy you knew. He was erratic in behavior and even more unsteady in personality. Always covered in scratches and scars, you helped him when no one else would. Regardless of his nature, he was your best friend. He stuck by you growing up, and you both evolved into harborers of chaos. You both despised the disgusting, fascist rule of Seido, and wished to liberate its people.

This way of thinking got you both into insurmountable amounts of trouble. Your parents, not wanting you to stray from the goodwill of order, had said that night that you stay away from the boy. You were utterly crushed. He was the only friend you had, your confidant, your equal in matters of mayhem. You sought out the dark haired boy and told him you were forbidden from ever seeing him again. Enraged by your parents' idea of control, you both cursed Seido’s regime, and decided to run away together. Being young and dumb, neither of you got very far. Orderrelm’s guards had found you at your parents' request, and had you sent home.

They decided that you could only learn the right path where he could not find you. As such, you were sent to Earthrelm, to begin anew, and unlearn your heinous ways of disarray. You were enraged, not because you were being sent away, but because you never could say goodbye to him. He was crushed when he heard that you were gone. He was told you had resented his ways, and that was why you had left. He was wholly crushed. You were his only friend and he had come to find out you had not loved him at all. He vowed that he would not only seek his vengeance on Seido, but on you as well. With each passing day his resentment grew, and with each passing day, you yearned to be by his side once more. The boy you grew up with, and had come to love with all your heart. That boy’s name was Dairou. . .

You could still picture his face in your mind. The dark hair that always fell over his eyes. The big smile he always wore even in the face of injustice. His cute nose that had scrunch lines from his expressiveness. And those eyes. Those deep, beautiful eyes that always looked upon you with adoration when nothing else was right. The carefully preserved image of him danced around in your head, frequenting your dreams. It was almost as if you could still hear him calling your name.

“Y/N. . .”

Dairou?

“Y/N.”

Dairou, is that you?

“Wake up Y/N.” The voice faded into one that was not his.

What?

You shot up from your sleep to hear, “Wake up! We have training–” SMACK!

“OUCH!” You cover your head in pain as you look to see who you just headbutted. Kung Lao is keeled over on the floor holding his own head in discomfort.

“A simple ‘good morning’ would have been just fine ya know.” You scramble out of bed to apologize but end up falling on top of the monk. He lets out a wheeze as the wind is knocked out of him. You shout out apologies as you get off him and help him up. He remains clutching his stomach as he talks.

“Sometimes your chaotic nature isn’t the greatest thing ever.” Before you can ask what that means, he is quick to shoot out, “No offense.” You simply roll your eyes and tell him to get out so you can get dressed for the day.

When was the last time I had dreamed about him? Why now? I can’t be distracted. Not when the tournament is coming up.

You splash cold water on your face to snap you out of your daze, but you still see his face. Those piercing black eyes gazing at you. Wishing you were still here. After a few seconds you realize you’ve been staring at your reflection in the mirror. Looking at the dark circles under your eyes, you think Kung Lao could have given you a few more minutes of rest. Chuckling to yourself, you head to your wardrobe to pull out a fresh training uniform. You get dressed quickly and pause as you look down at the bracelet you always wore.

It was a handmade bracelet you and Dairou made for each other when you were young. It is crafted from various ribbon, string, and beads you found. It’s not pretty, but that is what makes it more special to you. You both weaved each piece together with no regard for the final product. As such, it is a colorfully chaotic accessory you both swore to never take off. It represents your bond, no matter how chaotic the world or the outside may be. In this case, the outside being the unsightly bracelet. Smiling to yourself, you put your hair out of your face and made your way to the training grounds.

--Today is a big day; the day Liu Kang chooses his champion for Earthrealm. --

You find Johnny and Kenshi first. The former has his phone out while recording the latter’s training warm up. Kenshi maneuvered his sword with such grace and expertise. If you ever learn to use a katana, he will be the man you'Il go to for sure. It seems Johnny hasn’t noticed your presence in the training ground. Or if he has, he finds his phone more interesting, though, that’s not likely knowing him.

You look around for Kung Lao, only to find he is nowhere to be seen.

Hypocrite, he tells me to be at training and yet here he is, not here. Typical Kung Lao fashion it seems. As his whereabouts remain a mystery to you, you turn your attention to the friendliest of them all, Raiden. Although, it doesn’t seem like he will be so friendly with the monks sparring with him. Giggling, you walk over to where he is about to begin his training.

“Mind if I watch Raiden? I promise to only observe this time.” You flash him a smirk, knowing you truly wouldn’t do anything. . . This time. He's quick to respond, “Only if you promise NOT to trip me this time.” You snort, “Oh come on, it was only one time. Alas, I promise, I will just watch. Orderrealm's honor,” you hold up your right hand in mock honesty. “You hated Orderrealm,” he deadpans. You roll your eyes and smile as you push him into his sparring circle. You take a seat on the edge of his ring, keeping a good distance so you don’t get in the way.

Raiden gives the signal to begin and a group of eight start circling around him. Wiggling in anticipation, you eagerly await when the first monk will strike. A brave soul takes the first jab, trying to catch him off guard. He easily deflects the attack and finishes him with a swift hit to the sternum. Another comes from behind for a side-kick. Letting out a gasp, you almost think he had a shot on Raiden. Foolish are you to think that would get him. He deflects both the kick and the oncoming jab; returning the actions with a jump-kick to the face.

You cringe internally as that had to have hurt. He ends up in a fighting stance immediately. Ready for the next attack. His attention shifts behind him as the next challenger goes for an easily blocked punch. With a second punch blocked, Raiden grabs and twists his arm out of the way and lands a harsh kick to the face again. He goes back to the middle of the circle and presumes a defensive stance. Raising his hands in the air, he circles them around to signal the end of the session.

Watching his form is mesmerizing, he trains endlessly and it shows in his perfected stance. You let out loud applause at his show of skill. He smiles at your praise, then turns his attention to the approaching Kung Lao. “Way to show up to practice Lao.” You give him a smug grin until you notice the most peculiar hat in his hands, “What in all the realms is that?” He is quick to respond, “I was practicing. I was practicing making this beauty.” Raiden chimes in, “That is not a good idea.” “It is genius, Raiden.” Leo retorts. “I agree, this is an excellent idea. The chaos that will ensue is sure to be good.” You grin while reaching to nab his hat. He pulls it away from your reach and continues on. “The next time we see Sub-Zero, I will have to thank him for inspiring it.” He finishes by running his fingers across the bladed edge of the hat. Hissing in pain, he seems to have cut himself.

“See? It won’t be effective.” It was at this time you notice Johnny had been recording Raiden’s training and this interaction the whole time. Kung Lao rolls his eyes as he prepares his impromptu demonstration. He flings his hat at the wood training dummy in the training grounds and it slices it in half with ease. As the hat comes back around like a boomerang, Lao catches it, spinning it on the tip of his fingers. You look upon his act in awe as Raiden looks more shocked than anything. “Maybe it's too effective.” He states bluntly.

Kung Lao simply puts his hat on and smiles at proving him wrong.

“We just need to get on with it. We’ve been cooped up here for months.” Johnny says, walking up to where you are. “I can’t base a cinematic universe on Outworld’s monsters and magic if I don’t ever see them. You roll your eyes, “It hasn’t been that long Johnny. We will see all the fun and madness eventually.” “Says you, you’ve seen it all before.” Scoffing, “Have not, just because I am not from Earthrelm doesn't mean I have been to Outworld.” He was about to retort, but Kenshi walks up and speaks instead.

“That’s why you’re here?” He looks annoyed, rightfully so at the next thing that leaves the actor’s mouth. “Liu Kang said that this gig would change the arc of my life. That’s how it gets done. My ex will rue the day she gave up on me.” Kung Lao just crosses his arms as the rest of you roll your eyes. Kenshi sarcastically says, “So selfless.” Johnny isn't having any attitude so he shoots back a quip of his own. “Oh please tattoo, you’re just here to get your sword back.” You chuckle at their petty squabble. Raiden is quick to diffuse the argument, “We all have our reasons for being here. Some better than others,” he looks from Kenshi to Johnny at that last part, “But we are not here to fight among ourselves. We are here to fight for Earthrealm.”

You think briefly about your reason for being here. You were stranded in Earthrealm, and given the opportunity to fight for yourself by Liu Kang. Being at the Wu Shi for most of your life, you now see the kindness of him taking you in. You still can’t help but wonder how things could have been had you stayed in Orderrealm. If you stayed with– BWONG! The sound of the gong snapped you out of your mind, and the others out of their disagreement. You hear Johnny remark as you fidget with your bracelet, “It’s about damn time.”

Liu Kang walks out from the canopy and begins his announcement, picking up where your conversation left off. “And today, one of you will be chosen to fight for it at the tournament.” You all look a little confused until Raiden speaks up. “Only one of us, Lord Liu Kang? Isn’t Outworld fielding several champions?” “The tournament’s rules give the host realm that advantage. And it is Outworld’s turn as host.” He states. You let out a huff, “Well that sucks.” Raiden turns to glare at your remark, but Johnny distracts you both. “You know, I don’t know why I’ve never asked this, but uhhhh, what’s our record at this tournament?”

“Earthrealm and Outworld have long been evenly matched. But Outworld is gaining strength. Should it win, its more militant factions will be emboldened.” He says with a stern expression. This confuses you, and Raiden voices your concern. “I thought you admired Outworld.” “It is a place of great knowledge, wealth, and beauty. But our realms do not share goals and beliefs,” he steps from the canopy and continues walking, “We coexist peacefully because Outworld respects our strength. Should we show weakness, our rival will become an enemy.” using a more grave tone at the last half, this causes a shudder to run down your spine.

Kung Lao is proud to chime in, “I will not lose, Lord Liu Kang.” “First,” Liu Kang starts, “You must win the right to represent us. Whichever one of you outlasts the others will be chosen.” He sits down on his chair and the monks kneel on the ground behind him. You all look around at each other in anticipation. Excited to earn the right to become the champion.

“Y/N,” he starts, “It is with a heavy heart that I say that you will be unable to become our champion.” Your heart sinks. “But Lord Liu Kang, I have been here the longest. Why am I unable to be your champion?” You nearly yell, but you contain your disbelief to a more respectful volume. The hurt you feel is evident as Liu Kang continues. “It is not because you are not good enough, you are one of my most skilled warriors and I could not be prouder of you.” You almost let out a tear at his appraisal. “Then . . . why?” You take in a shaky breath. He looks at you softly. “It is because you are not of Earthrealm descent. You are from Orderrealm. That is why you are not permitted to participate. I am sorry.” You look down at the ground. Head spinning as you take in his words.

Kung Lao places his hand on your shoulder for comfort. Liu kang’s words make sense, but it still hurts that he had not told you sooner. “I understand, Lord Liu Kang.” You bow as you walk over and kneel beside him next to the other monks. You wipe the frown off your face and shout, “May the best man win!”

“Raiden,” Liu Kang calls, “Step forward.” The mentioned man steps up and bows his head, lifting it as Johnny calls out, “Good call. Cull the weak first.” He smirks at Raiden. “You shall face him, Johnny Cage.” Liu Kang states with a bored face. This warrants a snicker out of you and Cage glares at you. Kenshi chimes in, “Ready for your close up?” Kung Lao and Kenshi both back away as the two fighters take their positions. “All right, let’s do this. But remember, farm boy, I'm a global martial arts icon,” he waves his arms out in show, “I don’t think you can handle this much boom.”

Liu Kang rolls his eyes at Johnny’s air of cockiness. The fight begins and ends almost as quickly as it started. Johnny was overconfident and Raiden had dedicated himself to this fight. Raiden desired to prove himself worthy of the title of champion, and Johnny could simply not handle his abilities.

Raiden helps the star off the ground and the latter quickly retreats, with Kenshi taking his place. You look at Johnny and whisper to him, “So much for all that boom, huh?” He just frowns at you and looks to the next fight. You wonder how this fight will turn out as Kenshi has more experience in real fights than Raiden.

The fight lasts longer than the previous encounter. They trade blows more effectively, but alas, Raiden comes out victorious. Raiden had shown that he not only had the heart, but the nerve necessary to emerge victorious. Kenshi stands and they both bow in respect for the other. Liu Kang announces that we can rest and that Raiden will face his final challenge this evening. The anticipation can be felt by the final challengers: Raiden and Kung Lao.

“You did amazing, Raiden!” You slap him on the back lightly. “Thank you, I tried my best.” He gives you a warm smile. You pull him into a side hug, which he gladly accepts. With an unsuspecting smile on your face, you creep your hand up to his hat slowly. “I was shocked how quickly you beat Johnny, it was incredible.” “You give me far too much credit.” He shoves you away and makes a quick grab for your hand, but you were quicker to pull the string attached to your finger away. Your yo-yo yanking the hat right off his head and directly onto yours. This leaves Raiden spinning after his hat.

“I expected you to notice my hand sooner.” You take the hat and spin it upside down on your finger. This makes the other men laugh and Raiden’s dumbfounded face. He tries to make a grab for the hat, but you move out of the way. You release your yo-yo, which you named Reaper, to wrap around Raiden’s arm, and pull it back quickly to make him spin around. He takes this chance to sweep your legs and snatch the hat as you fall to the ground. OOF, that knocked the wind out of you.

He reaches out an arm to help you up, but you grip it and pull him down to the ground with you. He chuckles out, “Enough with the yo-yo pranks.” “Aw, but they’re so much fun for jokes.” You give and fake pout as you both stand up. “At least for now,” Kung Lao says, “He needs to be at full strength if he even wants to think about beating me for the title of champion.” “Ever the humble one I see Lao. Nothing like Raiden who toots his own horn everyday.” You say with utmost sarcasm.

“Very funny Y/N.” Lao huffs. However, Raiden cuts you both off, “I will have to agree, I will need my strength for tonight’s fight. I must rest up. It would be wise for you to do the same Kung Lao.” He gives a stern look to the hat wielder. “Fine, fine. We will see how the best man is tonight.” With this, you all go your separate ways in preparation for this evening's big event.

---------------

It’s night when you all gather again for the final fight. The two farm boys have been kneeling in front of each other for several minutes, silently awaiting their command to begin. You stand behind the rows of monks next to the swordsman and the Hollywood star. The former set of boys calmly arise. Looking at each other like they both need this chance, but only one can emerge champion.

“Fifty bucks says Kung Lao wins.” Johnny quips with a smirk. “Make it interesting, bet me Sento.” Kenshi replies, but Cage is quick to answer back, “Not on your life.” “Guys. Calm down. They both have a strong chance to win. Let’s see how this unfolds, hm?” You break up the fight and get them to chill out. With this, Liu Kang arises from his seat as he introduces the match with great authority.

“Raiden. Kung Lao. The winner of this match represents Earthrealm against Outworld. It is a grave duty, not to be undertaken lightly.” The atmosphere grows more serious than before. Everyone pays close attention to his words as he continues. “You may step back now and suffer no dishonor.” The look of determination in their eyes grew as he finished his preamble. “I choose to fight, Lord Liu Kang.” Raiden proudly claims. “As do I.” Kung Lao follows. Liu Kang looks upon his warriors, “Then may the best man win.” He bows in respect to them individually. He returns to his seat to wait for the action to begin.

“Concede, Raiden. You have never beaten me. That won’t change today.” “No? If the monks have taught us one thing, it’s that the only constant in the universe is change.”

And how right he was without even knowing it yet. You nudge Johnny on the side “Ever the eloquent man, hmm?” The actor had to stifle a chuckle, “If he could fight with words alone he could rival that of Liu Kang.” You can even see Kenshin smirk at that remark. You turn your attention back to your friends. You wish that they both could become champion, but you knew only one could emerge victorious.

You watch the fight unfold before you. They were both so quick on their feet it felt like watching a tornado. In Kung Lao’s case, he had a move that actually looked like a tornado. They exchanged blow after blow. Kick after punch after jab. Neither wanted to give up the fight. It was when Kung Lao slipped up that Raiden took advantage and was able to beat him.

Kung Lao sat on the ground, utterly defeated. “There is a first time for everything, Kung Lao.” Raiden helped his friend off the ground. The god stood from his chair, “Although you have all trained well, Raiden has excelled. The outcome does not surprise me.” You can only wonder what he meant by that statement.

Kung Lao looks distraught. “How could I have–” You placed a hand on his shoulder. He looks at you and you feel his hurt. He then turns to Raiden, leaving your touch. “Congratulations Raiden.” He quickly lowers his head at the new champion. Liu Kang held out a small box in his hand. “For the tournament, you will need this.” He opens the box, and inside is a glowing blue amulet.

Raiden takes the item from its case and studies it. There is lightning that can be heard crackling from it. Everyone was curious what it was. “Forged by the Elder Gods, it gives the wearer power over lighting and thunder.” When Raiden seems awestruck by the charm, Liu Kang continues, “Go ahead, try it.”

Raiden takes a breath and turns to face the large statue in the courtyard. He readies his stance as he gathers energy and holds the amulet up to wield its power. An immense stream of lightning bolts from his hand. Your eyes go wide in amazement. You had only seen elemental magic from Liu Kang.

It seems Johnny had also not seen such a thing before as he had his phone out, recording the whole thing. “Holy Ark of the Covenant!” He could only voice his wonder, as if his face was not amused enough.

Raiden stops his show of newfound power, “It is incredible, but is it necessary?” Liu Kang spoke, “In addition to possessing great might, the Outworlders you will face also wield great magic. The amulet levels the playing field.”

As Raiden contemplates the magic, Kung Lao comes up to him. “You must be careful, Raiden. You could get hurt. Even killed!” He had a worried look upon his face. Regardless of losing, he still cared a great deal about his friend.

“No tournament participant has ever been grievously injured or killed,” He attempts to comfort the new champion. “I would never send my champions unwittingly into mortal kombat.” Raiden nods in understanding.

“We leave in seven days for Outworld’s capital, Sun Do. The tournament will be held at the Palace of Empress Sindel.” “Wait, we are leaving for Outworld in a week? Are we really ready for this Lord Liu Kang?” You look at him with worry evident on your face. His gaze softens at you, “I trust that you are ready for whatever may face you all ahead. Have faith that all you have learned in your time here will not fail you.”

“How can you be so certain?” You ask the question on everyone’s minds. “Have confidence in yourself and your comrades, and the rest will fall into place,” This eases your concern slightly. “Now, you must all go rest. We do not have long before we travel to Outworld. There is more preparation and training to be done.”

You all head off to your rooms and try to sleep. For yourself, and you predict for others as well, the anticipation of the journey in front of you keeps your slumber at an arm's length. You can’t help but feel nervous, like something maybe not bad, but unexpected will happen. Whatever will happen, you will face it then. For now, you calm yourself down, and let your mind slowly drift off into peaceful sleep. . .

End Notes: I am potentially gonna add mini chapters where reader talks to some characters individually. I am doing this to add more substance to the story (which everyone already knows) and to add more originality to it. Please feel free to leave constructive criticism or feedback on my writing. I'll also try to keep myself consistent in writing/updating.

I’m also gonna try actually formatting it next time,, this looks like a hot mess😭

Have a swag-tastic day--
