Why should we care about the past?

How can we know where we're going if we don't know where we're coming from...

the study of past events, particularly in human affairs

Without history we can not understand or define today. History is beautiful because it allows us to deepen our empathy for the present and learn how to explore emotions in a way that is enlightening. If we can not retell our previous story how can we understand where we are going?

Without history we are lost in translation. Time is a specific marker of when an event occurred, but the story teaches us how to relate to those who came before us and to recognize that the future depends on our ability to make changes.

History is filled with answers. The answers of yesterday echoes as solutions to our problems today. If we can spend more time studying history we can create new connections that are insightful, change patterns that are destructive, and have better outcomes for tomorrow.

Here is my blog to capture Black History as it intertwines with the many cultures that creates America, today.

Subtle Ways a Smart Character Shows They're Smart

✧ They notice what isn’t said. The gap. The silence. The missing piece.

✧ They explain complex things in the simplest words. No ego, just clarity.

✧ They pause before answering, not because they’re unsure, but because they’re calculating what not to say.

✧ They remember names. Tiny details. The kind of stuff people don’t expect anyone to keep.

✧ They don’t correct people when they’re wrong. Unless it matters. Then it’s precise.

✧ They ask smart questions and actually listen to the answers.

✧ They use sarcasm as camouflage, people underestimate snarky geniuses.

Happy Monday!

Happy Monday!

Today is Monday, May 12th and we're going to be writing tonight from 6-7 PM so join the group message if you want to write with us.

This blog is going to be reblogging a lot of content that @siixerror has been working on. Over the weekend, Si spent so much time setting up the Tumblr - it has been nothing short of super fun. Establishing the Tumblrs for @sagedbysi @blckhxtry @siixerror means that there's space from Facebook and the ability to write without pressure or judgement. The algorithms of the mainstream platforms get draining, so for a switch up Si decided to come back home to - Tumblr.

Happy Monday!

The focus has been on content creation and finishing up @css147 by August 1.

Content Creation: make more digital art/writing, which means that it's important to be on Canva and queuing as many posts as possible as often as possible. The struggle comes with making the content, rather than queuing it --> it's an art form for sure and it takes a lot of patience.

Writing @css147: finishing up a science fiction novel for self publishing, trying to stick to a deadline helps with feeling motivated to write. If the book isn't finished by August 1 then the next project will start. The struggle is remaining true to writing goals --> this is taking a lot of discipline.

Reading 24 novels: a reading goal, maybe you can read most of these, maybe you can't but reading is important because it fuels the creative juices to write good stories - to track reading goals you should use Bookmory

There is a current reading list:

Happy Monday!

The plan is the share content to build the writing and reading community for Sage. If you are a writer or reader that is looking for a laid back community to join then please be in the group chat.

The more readers and writers, the better the conversations and the more inspiration.

Time Travel with me

Let's go back in time together at local events in Virginia

Lately, I've been studying the past to understand the ideology behind the Trump Administration. When listening to Donald Trump explain his plan to the public he makes a lot of references to the 17 and 1800s, he even refers to that time period as "the age of a golden era." To learn more about what he cares of, I'm stepping out of my box to study Caucasian Americans in a new light.

As a homework assignment, my professor recommended us to choose a culture that is opposite and attend an event to learn about cultural perspectives and then blog about our experiences. I selected two events, in particular, because I have taken a keen interest in learning more about life in the 17-1800s for African Americans.

The first event takes place on April 24th, 2025 at 6 PM (EST), it is an exhibit to highlight Jefferson Davis & Robert E. Lee at The American Civil War Museum. The exhibit is being promoted "as a way to share how Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee worked together, despite their differences, to create the Confederate command."

I am interested in this event because many people talk about the confederacy in a negative light and I want more information, on my own, about the creation of the confederacy. What's interesting about this event is that it is being held in my city, Richmond, Virginia, a place where Robert E. Lee's statue was removed from Monument Ave on September 8th, 2021. If the confederacy is all bad, why are people in Richmond still hosting events to share information about Robert E. Lee? I will be attending this event to learn more, for myself, and then blog about my experience.

Time Travel With Me

The next event I am interested in attending it titled, Thomas Jefferson & the Monacan Burial Mound with Rick Britton. This event is taking place at The Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society in Charlottesville, Virginia on March 19th at 6 PM (EST).

These events are interconnected because Jefferson Davis was named after Thomas Jefferson due to the respect of Jefferson's Davis' father for Thomas Jefferson. This is interesting because in history, Thomas Jefferson is commemorated for how much he fought for the rights of Indians and African Americans, meanwhile, Jefferson Davis believed opposite. In doing this research, I learned Thomas Jefferson did, in fact, own slaves which makes him a person of contradiction. Because, while he believed in freedom he also contributed to torture which makes him a character of question. What many can appreciate about Thomas Jefferson is his curiosity, he is credited as being one of the many scholars of his era that wrote the foundations of science, law, and government due to the amount of time spent in observation and research. My question is, was he all bad?

The significance of this event is that The Monacan Indian Nation have a specific burial ground known as Rassawek where local developers considered destroying the site in 2022 for the purposes of building a "river water intake, pump station, and pipeline (2022). In the past, Thomas Jefferson cared for the Monacan Indians because he used them for his studies of archaeology. His ability to excavate their site created the foundations of archaeology today. However, the question I am begging is, "why now?" I want to attend this event to see what the importance is of this being ran today.

Recently, in Richmond, Virginia on January 14th, 2025 a local reservoir's water pump failed. For an entire week multiple cities throughout Central Virginia were without water due to the lack of care for the water pumps. When discovering this event, I was interested because I wanted to visit Charlottesville, Virginia since it is the place where many white supremacists gathered to protest the removal of Robert E. Lee's statue.

Time Travel With Me

Originally, I did not know that The Monacan Indian's had a preservation that was being considered as a space for a new water pump station to be created. With this event happening, I feel like it is all the more important to show up because I am curious to see if there is going to be conversation surrounding what to do with the site. I have not been to Charlottesville, Virginia. Due to the news, it is a place I avoid. However, with this assignment I am challenging myself to step out of my comfort zone and learn about a portion of history that may need someone's care to continue to exist. I am interested to learn how the Indians related to Thomas Jefferson, if they were accepting of his studies, if they received any type of care for their traditions, or if their burial ground will continue to exist.

Overall, I am asking you to travel back in time with me because this matters. Throughout my childhood, I was told I am Indian, more specifically Cherokee and Black Hawk. Although the Monacan Indians may not be the direct tribe I was told I belong to, their history still matters. I invite you to travel back in time with me, have uncomfortable conversations, ask hard questions, and contemplate the significance of the past in relation to how it connects to the present.
