Part Six

Voices Carry

There had been a pile of credits on your desk when you had come into work that morning.

Sadly, you already knew it wasn’t a bonus or even a fun mystery you could unravel between your other duties. No, that was Julgum’s charming way of letting you know that he had been invited to a fundraiser and that he needed you to accompany him.

The first time it had happened, you had been confused, then wary. Any concerns that Julgum had unprofessional designs on you were quieted when he gave you a list of tasks for the event. He wasn’t inviting you as a date. No, he needed you to help him network, keep track of information, and usher him into a transport when he had too much to drink.

It wasn’t a favorite part of your job, but you didn’t mind it as much as you had expected to. You were still so relieved that Julgum wasn’t hitting on you that anything else seemed fine by comparison.

Besides, you only used some of the credits to purchase clothing. You kept the rest and refused to feel guilty about it.

That morning had been remarkably quiet, and you were using your personal datapad to browse some formal clothing that was on clearance at a local store. You had added several possibilities to your cart when the office comlink beeped.

“Senator Julgum’s office. How may I help you?”

The greeting rolled so naturally from your lips that you scarcely had to think about it anymore. You had scrolled to look at another option before the person on the other side of the line made any noise at all.

“Hello.”

“Hello,” you replied, just as automatically as your first greeting. “How may I help you?”

There was the sound of a sigh, one that turned into a slight chuckle as it trailed off. Something in the voice was familiar, and you set the datapad down on your desk. There was nothing to see, of course, but you still wanted to pay attention to the call.

“Why are you always there when I comm?” the voice asked. “Doesn’t Julgum give you a day off?”

“I’m sorry,” you apologized. “To whom am I speaking?”

The silence stretched an uncomfortable length of time, filled with a vague sense of horror. You made a valiant effort, but you finally broke and chuckled aloud.

The tutting on the other end of the link made you smile even wider. Julgum’s mysterious caller clearly had some sense of humor. It was late in your acquaintance - such as it was - for that humor to make an appearance, but you would take it over tricks and anger.

“That was mean,” he told you. “I’m many things, but forgettable isn’t one of them. Unless the pressure of working such long hours for the good senator is making you crack?”

Even with the censure, his voice was playful. He seemed utterly delighted that you had messed with him. Of course, you could claim to be in earnest and insist that you didn’t know who he was, but your laughter may have made that less believable.

…Besides, with everything that Julgum put you through, didn’t you deserve the chance to connect with someone?

“I don’t think I’m the only one working long hours,” you countered. “You’ve called for three days in a row trying to speak with the senator. Maybe it’s best to tell your boss to make an appointment.”

“Whatever do you mean? This is only the second time we’ve spoken.”

You believed your snort was permissible, given the overly innocent tone he had used. “Yes, we always get calls from the aides to prominent senators pretending to be the senator themselves, or Trade Federation representatives who make threats.”

“Those Federation types can be dangerous,” he told you. “I hope you gave him what he asked for.”

“Unfortunately, I couldn’t help the first one, but the second one was happier with the results of our conversation.”

“A second Trade Federation rep? What did they want?”

“If you don’t know anything about the first one, I don’t see why you should care about the second,” you said, audibly grinning.

“Clever thing, aren’t you?” His voice was amused again. “You’re right, I don’t know anything about any Trade Federation calls.”

“I thought as much,” you assured him.

Apparently, he wasn’t finished. “But I hate to hear that you’re getting so much strange comms traffic. Tell you what: I know a few people who can set up a system to screen callers who don’t have any real business with the senator. Patch me through to him and I’ll pitch the idea. I can even throw in a discounted estimate.”

“I would be happy to let you speak with Senator Julgum. Just give me your name and your appointment time.”

His laugh was clear this time, transmitting rich and loud over the line. “You don’t miss a thing, do you? I hope Julgum knows how closely his assistant watches his back.”

“He doesn’t,” you replied without thinking. And as you were biting your lip, the man laughed again. Hastily, you added, “But it’s fine. This is a job. I get paid in credits, not in gratitude.”

“Still, he should be careful. Someone might steal you away.” You didn’t know how to respond to that, but the mystery caller didn’t seem to need any input from you for his current train of thought. “What do you look like?”

“What?” you asked reflexively. After a beat to collect yourself, you said, “Surely you can understand why, given our current conversation about stealing people, I don’t want to answer that question.”

“Did you know you get overly formal when you’re flustered?” he asked. “I bet you’re pretty.”

The conversational whiplash was sudden and overwhelming. You shook your head, uncaring that he couldn’t see it. “I’m not. And I’m also starting to think you don’t have an appointment to speak with the senator. Do you?”

“I do not.”

You sighed and pressed the button to sever the connection. This wasn’t a great job, but you still needed to do work that wasn’t centered on flirtatious comlink conversations.

It would just take a moment to stifle the twinge of regret you felt at having not asked his name.

Author's Note - I know, this chapter is slow. This story is slow. But I'm trying to flesh out their relationship at a pace that feels steady and natural. Maybe our reader is just a little hesitant to trust a stranger and Mereel could use a little slow in the breakneck pace of a Null trooper. Thank you for reading anyway!

As a quick reminder, my taglist is now defunct. You are more than welcome to follow my writing sideblog at @wanderinginksplot-writes. I tag all of my fics with the name of the fic itself, so you can see what you want and not have to deal with the rest!

It must feal very weird. Like could you feal the baby developing? If yes than that must be sooo unconfortable. And how often the pregnant person would get overwhelmed or overstimulated? That sounds like a bad dream

We've gotta talk about what it must be like to be pregnant with a Force Sensitive baby

Hii so I have a question (again)

Do people get a noification on Ao3 if I change something in an already existing chapter? Like I edit it? Or should I just take down the fic and reupload it

I really like Anakin because of this, 'cause he had a certain realism to him. People aren't born evil, its their choices and their circumstances. And yes Anakin had many chances to choose a different path, maybe not be forced into a torture chamber till his inevitable death (His armor), but he made his choices. There were many other factors (Palpatines manipulation, not trusting the Order, etc.) but ultimately it was him. HE made Darth Vader but he was neglected to. I don't know the Jedi really checks mental health, but with Anakin they should have helped him more.

my favorite thing about anakin as a character is the inherent nuance lucas wrote into his story, like he's neither an innocent victim nor an inherently evil monster, he's just some guy put in a series of Situations and ultimately failing the test of his humility and self-control. he was certainly flattered and shaped by the devil, spiraling into something unrecognizable, but he chose to take every step down the pathway to hell. lucas knew he would lose a certain demographic by making him basically a greedy pawn in the larger story, not a righteous betrayed macho badass, but he did it anyway. he made him an awkward romantic and a loyal friend, a generous boy and a brilliant teen. he made sure he had all the positive qualities that meant that he had potential to be so much more than vader, but it was clearly his choice to lie, murder, and fully squander that potential. there are no excuses for what he became, no acceptable reasons to commit mass slaughter. he became an unbelievably selfish and impatient man, reckless and wantonly violent. hayden captured that nuance so well, nobody can match the sweetness of his smile and the absolute horror of his scowl on mustafar. to view him through a single lens as either pure victim of manipulation and (canonically unsupported) emotional neglect, or a creepy evil villain, denies the heart of his story and the weight of his tragedy. he's neither an angel nor a demon, he's both and neither, he's deeply human, a classical tragic hero with a flaw of greed. lucas made a choice with the prequels to tell a story that not everyone wanted to hear, and the result was a character that i think is one of the best of modern pop culture, mostly because he feels to me so very, very ancient and eternal.

Disclaimer: I read the books a long time ago, so if something is wrong then sorry! And it will be on AO3 too, I just need to figure out tagging Wordcount: 5275 Reading time (estimate): 7 min Hope you enjoy! ⸜(。˃ ᵕ ˂ )⸝♡ Here is the AO3 link: Mare Ditat, Rosa Decorat

Memoria Praeteritorum

It was very light for the night in Kyromut. Mandalores two moons where full, causing many headaches in the household. One person who was especially snappy was Walon Vau. The old man had a spliting headache for two days, and even before that he fellt like shit.

He was sitting in the kitchen while waiting for his tea to finish, Mird laying next to him. Even when he was relatively far from the karyai, he could hear the happy chatter coming from there. After a little time he heard the soft taps of cruthes.

He stud up from the table and went to the cupboard to take down a cup. Vau thought about joining the group, but his headache said differently.

The taps were getting closer when it suddenly stoped. Walon looked at the door and he seen a head full of choppily cut red hair. He smiled.

“Miss Etain. Would you like tea?” He tried to pull his most inviteing smile. “Its Behot tea. Good for an upset stomach.” Walon poured a mug and held it out.

“Sergeant Vau!” Etain smiled and took the tea. “Thank you!” She said politely and sat down facing the window. Vau took place too.

“The moons are beautiful, aren’t they?” Etain pulled up her legs and crossed them. Vau's supprised she could move this freely after her injuries.

“They are. But they cause a killer headache too.” He chuckled. Etain suddenly looked at him and raised an eyebrow. In response Vau raised one too then he shook his head. “ How are your injuries doing?” Walon asked.

“They are fine…” She looked down into the mug.

“You are healing quickly. You Jedi are fascinating in many cases.” Vau tried to give her encuraging words, even when he didn’t really know how to give those.

“Hm. Thank you.” Etain suddenly become very quiet. ‘Maybe i said something offensive? I don’t think I did’ Vau thought. Etain oppened her mouth like she wanted to say something, when Kad ran into the room, Mereel following in his trail.

“Kad!” Mereel called out, smiling. “Don’t run away just like that!” When Mereel arrived at the kitchen he stopped in his track to look at Vau. The sergeant shook hi head and turned away. He did not notice Mereels quirked eyebrows.

The boy ran to his mother and asked to be picked up. Etain tried lifting him up, but a pained expression painted her face. Kad looked into Etains eyes, like knowing that she was in pain

“Don’t worry Kad.” Vau said. “Ba’vodu Mereel will help” Mereel quickly looked away from the older man, and went to put Kad up into the young womans lap.

Vau stood up too. “I have a tea somewhere that is good for tea.” He want to the cupboard and started looking around.

“I don’t think tea will help her” Mereel proclaimed “Mij is in the karyai, I can ask him for painkillers.” The young man turned to Etain

“Tea is fine, thank you.” Etain said while trying to get Kads fingers out of her hair. Mereel looked at her with a questioning stare “I can’t be forever on painkillers. An it’s not that bad.” Etain explained and Vau hummed.

“You do you…” Mereel accepted. He sat down at the table too

“And you Mereel? Would you like tea?” Vau offered.

“No thanks. Im fine.”

Walon shrugged and pulled out a tea. He put it in front of Etain and sit down in his place. HE petted Mird and pulled out his Kniting. Mereel raised his eyebrows again then looked at Etain. She shrugged and went back playing with Kad. The soldier looked back.

“Mereel. A little advice. If you keep raising your eyebrow to anything I do then they will stay that way”

The young man frowned and turned to Etain and Kad.

Vau heard a Holocall comming in and heard Kal’s voice.

“Fen Shysa, how — help you?” The conversation goes on for a good minute. “—— Vau?” suddenly everything goes silent. Even Kad raises his head. Walon can hear Kals limping steps comming closer. The short man suddenly arrives in the kitchen door. He looks irritated and suprised at the same time.

“It’s the Mand’alor” He gives him the commlink.

Vau stands up and takes the commlink, then tries to walk out, but Kal does not let him. Vau sighes and sits back.

“Vaus here. What can I help you with”

“Sargeant! Are you expecting visitors from Irmenu?” Vau shoots a suprised look. Visitors? From Irmenu? What in the Karkin’ hell…

“Depends…” He hesitates looking around the room. Everybody is silent “Who are they?”

“Two children. They come from the Irmenuan resistance? Heard of it?”

What the hell… Oh Goddes Kola

“No. Never” Vau answered

“Well they heard of you. They have a message from…” Walon hears a young voice “Cordelia?”

Walon suddenly feels dizzy. He can feel somebody staring at him. ‘Not her. Why? Why why why…”

“Vau? Are you here?”

He stedies his voice “Yes.”

“Do you know who that is?”

“Yes.” He sighs. “Do they have money with them?”

The mand’alor mumbles something on the otherside. “They have some Irmenuan Galleons but i don’t think it’s enought

“I will pay tomorow morning. Could you get them somewhere to sleep?

“Yes. Come to Oyu’baat. They will be here.”

“Got it.” Vau stoped the call and stud up in a quick manner. Kal stood in the door, determined not letting him out.

“Care to explain?” Kal asked. It irritaded Vau more than usual.

“No” Vau tried to walk trough Kal.

“You will explain it”

“It’s none of your business” Walon said with so much venom in his voice that it made Etain flinch.

Kal leaned closer “You aren’t leaving this room till you explained yourself.”

Vau leaned down, his golden eyes almost glowing. “Let me out” he ordered.

Kal couldn’t even react that quickly, but he was already moving. like something came over him, something was commanding him. He stared wide eyed

Vau walked out the kitchen seeing Ordo in the hallway. He turned his head back.

“I will explain everything tomorow.” When he looked back all four of them looked very shocked. He smirked to himself. He then turned around and went upstairs.

“Mird!” He called out and the strill was already next to him. They went into Walons room.

He stood in the shower, letting the hot water burn his old scars. He should be happy that Cordelia’s alive. But what are those children doing here? ‘Could they be…’ No, thats dumb. Cordelia was sent into a nunnery ‘But what if…’ No. He did not let his head wander into that direction. They are probably taken in by Cordelia. Or some random children she sent ‘She wouldn’t send anybody…’ He sighed ‘This can’t be good’

He turned of the shower and got dressed. When he walked out Mird was already laying in it’s place. Walon petted it and went to bed.

But sleep did not come for him.

An: I hope you liked it! It's short, but I think its good for first try. Feedback is greatly appreciated

Star Wars fans. Do you think the Jedi Order functioned as a galactical Red Cross/Red Crescend? That would make very much sense.

The Islamic Origins of the Jedi

Ramadan starts in a few days so I figured that now was a great time to talk about this!

(Disclaimer: My point here isn’t to detract from other sources of inspiration that GL used to create the Jedi, but simply to point out another, lesser known one that many often overlook or intentionally refuse to acknowledge.)

I’m Muslim. My family follows the Hanafi madhab, and the guidance of the Naqshbandi order of Sufi masters, mystics, and teachers. I’m by no means an expert or a scholar, but the Sufi theology and view of the Divine is so clearly prevalent as one of the many inspirations for the Force and the Jedi, that it’s hard to get ignore - and it’s hard to watch while people choose to ignore it.

For starters, we know that during his research for the films, George Lucas met and consulted with the Habibiyyah Sufi order in California. He asked questions and learned what they believed.

Something else that’s hard to ignore is the robes that the Jedi wear! I know they’re commonly thought to be inspired by other origins, but I’d like to point out that the traditional Sufi robes look similar to the Jedi as well.

Still not convinced?

Let’s look at the origins of the word ‘Jedi’. While most believe that it comes from the word ‘jidaigeki’, as GL has mentioned in passing, there is an Arabic equivalent that’s translated to fit the meaning of the Jedi Order with surprising accuracy.

The word is Al-Jeddi, which translates to ‘master of the mystic warrior way’.

In an article released by a prominent Sufi Muslim order, ‘jeddi’ is mentioned by name and a definition that looks and sounds familiar to the Jedi Order of Star Wars and how the Force is viewed by them:

“We are, at our core, a Movement of Jeddi; Sufi masters of Futuwwat ("the Way of the mystic-warrior"). We encourage adherents to train both physically AND spiritually, for their own personal edification and to enhance their knowledge and abilities in the Struggle. The Balance does not lie alone in contemplation, prayer and meditation; nor does it lie alone in action and revolution.”

At the end of the day, we know that Star Wars appropriated from many, many sources that went mostly uncredited and ignored - in ways that had lasting and negative impacts on the peoples and cultures that served as inspiration - and this was one of them.

One of my biggest complaints about the appropriation present here is that it is an opportunity missed - a big one. There was an opportunity to educate, to help others understand what is often misunderstood, simply by being transparent about what you took, from whom, and most importantly, why.

So I’m sharing this with you now, because education is everything, and it is so, so important to be aware of examples of things like this in the media we consume!
