"I loved your father like a brother and in another, kinder, world you and I would have been a family" is up there among the saddest relationship trope

I have the book, and because I’m this way, I had to check the epilogue first … “Peeta says” is a phrase Haymitch and Katniss both use as a shorthand for something being true, and I’m going to be thinking about that for a long time

Okay but it’s fucking brilliant that one of the themes of the book was about the distortion of history.

Usually prequels are a dangerous thing to write because unless they’re planned out well in advance, they risk contradicting lore in the main series. Even still, we knew barely anything about Haymitch’s games. They were the perfect stomping ground for new information, with a rough series of events but without a close temporal connection to the main books.

But though she had this freedom and safety net, while she could have just written a story that aligned with what we knew, Collins leaned into the idea of contradicting past lore head on and made it the damn thesis of the book; that yeah, actually, it did play out entirely differently from how the characters saw it, and yes that contradicts what you were told, that’s the point.

We didn’t really know what happened in the 50th games until we read it from Haymitch’s perspective, because what little information we did have was spliced up and edited. The video evidence was processed through the Capital, and twisted to serve their purposes.

Tackling that idea of history being written by those in power with a notoriously inconsistent medium? Goddamn, writer that you are, Suzanne Collins.

one of the most striking parts of sotr is the contrast between the capitol’s animalistic language vs haymitch’s association of nature with his loved ones.

on one hand, you have the dehumanizing language of the capitol towards the tributes—“piglets”, “claws”, “fur”, “paws.” on the other, sid is haymitch’s “rooster”, the district six kids are his “doves”, the gray rabbit is a reminder of his girl. even when wellie dies, haymitch goes from describing her gory death in human terms to that of a “headless baby chick.”

it’s just so fascinating to think of the natural world as a form of resistance, from the bird imagery to the districts’ plant names. the capitol does everything in its power to weaponize the natural world in the arena, to make the districts feel like animals, to create the illusion that they can control nature itself. but they all share the same planet, capitol or district. it’s a reminder of the shared humanity that the capitol tries to erase. so for the districts, to embrace nature is an act of rebellion in itself.

Hmm actually Lucy Gray is different from Haymitch and Katniss and Peeta because her tragedy is she caused the games to continue. If the games hadn't become entertaining, they wouldn't have continued and she made it entertaining because she was an entertainer - she saved herself but she doomed dozens more because she performed too well and it allowed the Capitol to make the games a performance in the later years. Haymitch's tragedy is that he couldn't end the games, Lucy Gray's is that she continued them.

Having a really long-term hyperfixation that has since faded is terrifying yes but it's also so embarrassing. Hi I used to think about Scrimblo Splungus 25/7. Yeah, for 2 years straight. Nah, I don't think about them anymore except for with a vague sense of melancholy as I recall how they used to make me feel. Anyways this new one, Blimpkins McGee? I'm gonna think about them forever and the cycle will NOT repeat in 2 years. Trust me guys.

if i’m ever brutally murdered and everyone feels like they need to do something productive in my memory, all i want is for you to pass legislation banning LED headlights in my name. regardless of how irrelevant it is to my murder. it’s relevant to my heart.

you can say what you want about Derek Hale but at the end of the day, when Stiles introduced him as his cousin Miguel, Derek still "yes and"ed him. A girlie would have written that in a fanfic and people would've said it was out of character. The children (Derek) crave shenanigans and tomfoolery, remember that.

Stiles: *throws a pokeball at Derek* Derek, I choose you! Derek: *catches the pokeball without looking away from where the betas are training* You need an ultra ball to catch a legendary pokemon. Stiles: How do you even know that and also that's so hot please make out with me

Another of my friend K's suggestions - when she found out I'd never watched twilight she suggested we do so together, but she keeps insisting she won't tell me what happens in the last ones in advance because then I'll 'never agree to watch them'. i am afraid.

People who are oppressed and traumatized die several deaths and are reborn multiple times. Mickey 17 is Mickey Barnes' greatest desire to live. Mickey 18 is Mickey Barnes' deep rage and violence; his reaction to being continuously ground under the boot of the higher class. No one can be expendible, because none of us are made to be expendible, yet some lives are treated as expendible. Some lives have less value than the upper class' "taste". 18, in the end, regains power through self-sacrifice—this is the extent of what he can do to free 17, his purest, most child-like desire to live. The traumatized fight back eventually; 17 channels 18 when he dreams of the wife printing herself and her husband, when he sees the bowl of blood (where did it come from? Who did she kill?) and this is his nightmare because he feels like his new found freedom is once again at risk; that he once again needs to be brutalized by tragedy. But he knows he has to resist and he finds strength in 18. "Fuck off". This movie has such heart and is a tribute to those of us who are crushed by the ones above them with more money; more power. Robert's portrayal of 17 is beautiful and personifies the best of humanity. It's just so well made and earnest and I'm so disappointed that so many of the reviews seem to have completely missed the point, instead failing to find satisfaction in some superficial perception of what makes a movie artsy.
