At what point do you think Bruce told Brandi about all the 'Trollstice' and 'The Bergens eating them' stuff? Do you think it was near the start of their relation ship or closer to current time? Maybe it slipped out at some point, like Bruce just casually mentioned it in conversation and Brandi was like 'Honey, WTF, that's not normal, that's a war crime.' OR maybe he still hasn't mentioned it at all to her?

I would say more towards the start of their relationship. Bruce just strikes me as someone who doesn’t like keeping secrets, and values honesty.

He kept it secret for a while, but as his relationship with Brandy grew, he started to be more open with not only her, but himself. It didn’t take long for him to feel comfortable enough to talk to her about it.

I’ll bet he just sat her down one night and told her everything, start to finish, about the Bergens, his brothers, everything. It was one of the crucial moments in their relationship that truly brought them closer together.

Brandy was horrified to say the least. She made him a bunch of comfort food after, and they watched cheesy Rom Coms till the sun came up. The next day, she got him in touch with the islands therapist/guru.

Have I mentioned their relationship is everything to me?

I wonder how Branch will react if he runs into JD's adoptive dad (Peppy became a real dad to him), and learns more about why Peppy wanted to take him in. Still excited for that showdown where Peppy apologizes to both of them and John finally calls him "dad" 🫂🥹💚🧡 I'm sorry, I just can't leave such an idea without a happy moment 🫶🫶😭😭

Branch is definitely more cautious towards King Peppy after hearing about what happened, and doesn’t exactly trust him. He never had the same relationship with King Peppy the JD did. He’s more pissed off than anything, and tries to avoid the King to a certain extent, definitely holding a grudge. But I like to think, over time, he might let his guard down (King Peppy’s a likable fella) and might confront him about what really happened.

King Peppy and JD will have their moment. Eventually😋

Quick question, if you were to do an ages reversed Au with the brothers (Branches as eldest, JD youngest, ect), what do you think would change about the story, just off the top of your head?

Ooooo this is tricky, ok uh… (Edit: I based this off of Great Decisions btw, I’m sorry, I didn’t read closely enough😖)

Branch - I think he would be a bit of an overbearing older brother. Not in JD’s perfectionistic way, but more like being in everyone’s business. He definitely has a schedule on each of them regarding their activities. He doesn’t want them to be perfect, but he expects them to listen, and is a bit self centered sometimes. Likely, Branch wouldn’t have left the tree. And unlike John Dory, he despises their father for what he did, and is similar to Grandma Rosiepuff in that sense where he refuses to talk about it. Also unlike JD, he did not drop out of school, Grandma Rosiepuff would be a lot more willing to help in this situation.

Floyd - It was Floyd’s idea to start BroZone to help his brother out (Branch was doing a bunch of jobs and wasn’t home too much). When the perfect family harmony fell apart, he was mortified, thinking he ruined everything, and ran. He had no idea Spruce followed after him.

Clay - His storyline’s about the same. He and Branch argued over many things, but more so life stuff vs band stuff, and when Floyd and Spruce disappeared, he left to live with King Peppy. He went missing in the tunnels running back to find his brothers…

Spruce - Spruce took the role of a mediator in this timeline. Floyd was really stressed all the time, so Spruce would typically step in and use his baby brother privilege to get Branch and Clay to stop arguing. He was always very good with baby JD. When he saw Floyd taking off, he followed him. But by the time he convince his brother to come back, it was too late, and they were lost.

JD - He had much more support growing up. Branch figured out he was dyslexic pretty quick, and helped him with learning to read. A bit of his perfectionism showed through, but it wasnt much till he got older. He was the one who Grandma Rosiepuff sacrificed herself to save, and after that happened, he took off. And Branch went after him. When they returned, they saw the decimated tree and collapsed tunnels, and despite his investigations, Branch figured the trolls were gone.

Instead of going to the Neverglade, they just lived in the woods, Branch just taking them as far as he could from Bergentown, his paranoia starting. They never found Rhonda. Because Branch is a bit more cautious, he did not gather that many injuries. And they likely found Troll Village sooner.

Branch was also able to pick up on the early warning signs of JD’s mental health problems.

Excerpt from Chapter 17: That Icy Fear

John Dory could feel himself becoming more and more frantic, but he tried desperately to swallow it down. Branch was talking, he just had to keep him talking… “Ok uh, what’s my favorite kind of berry?”

Branch let out a quiet hum, as if he wanted to speak, but just couldn’t find the energy to move his lips. Panic shot through John Dory, trying not to let it show in his voice as he asked again. “C’mon Bitty, you know this one. It’s small and blue, just like you, remember?”

The young troll didn’t reply. His head dropped further into John Dory’s chest, his breaths scarily slow. This was a stark contrast from John Dory, whose breaths quickened to a point he was nearly hyperventilating, unable to hold back the panic that was now surging through him.

“No no no, please Branch, please.” He begged, a sob building in his throat as he tried desperately to warm his brother’s icy skin. “C’mon buddy, please, I can’t- You can’t…”

This wasn’t happening, this couldn’t be happening… He was losing him. He messed up, and because of that, he was going to lose his little brother. It was all his fault. He was failing, failing, failing…

All at once, his brothers appeared around him, their faces matching expressions of pure panic as they stared down at the small troll in John Dory’s arms.

“John, do something!” Spruce commanded, voice shrill with desperation.

“You’re losing him!” Clay cried out, eyes wide with fear.

“Help him, please!” Floyd sobbed, tears streaming down his face. “Please, John Dory, help him!

You make a great point though. Not only does JD look like his father, but there are enough parallels between them I’ll bet King Peppy can’t help but see Pine in him sometimes. After all, Pine was pretty high up in the scouts, and worked closely with King Peppy. They were likely even friends at some point, before Pine’s mental state deteriorated, and his delusions overcame reason. Perhaps the reason King Peppy cared so much/tried to support JD is partly because he saw the warning signs, and didn’t want to see the young troll fall down the same path/spiral his father did…

It will!

But… It won’t be a HUGE major thing, the whole story isn’t going to shift to focus on it. It’ll have a very slow build, from friends to something more, but it’ll be more so in the background of everything else. JD isn’t really versed in anything relationship wise.

I am excited tho! And a little nervous hah… I’ve had this relationship planned since the beginning and don’t want people to suddenly dislike the story cuz they don’t like it. It’s not like a bad ship, it’s one of the more popular ones, but still… I get stressed easily😅 But yes! There will be one, and I’m very excited for when we get to it!

Love love love characters that present themselves as emotionally open social butterflies but the more you see of them the more obvious it is that they’re the most closed off fuckers in the story. Sure, they want to help you with your personal problems and messy emotions, but if you turn that shit back on them, they’ll shut down or deflect every time. Why are you sticking your nose in their business anyway? It’s not like it matters. They’re not a person, they’re just a role being played. They’re the guy who fixes things and saves people. Please ignore the man behind the mask, he’s fine. Everything’s fine.

it's so wild to me that you absolutely cannot force a hyperfixation to happen. like you'll watch the most perfectly tailor-made-for-you content that everyone says you'll love and feel absolutely nothing, and then the thing you watch on a whim to fill time will reach through the screen and put its damn fingers in your brain and start rearranging the neurons right in front of you and every single time you're like THIS??? I've finished reading the last chapter of Great Decisions, and I really want K. Peppy and JD to become a real family in the future. Well, like for John to call him dad, because in fact he replaced their father 🥰🥰🥰🥰

I think they’re already family! JD is definitely like a son to King Peppy, and JD very much sees King Peppy as a father figure! Idk if he’ll ever say it out loud again, but they feel the same way!

Hi, Ry. I came across your Trolls story "Great Decisions" and read the full thing. It was very interesting and just couldn't stop reading it till I got to the last chapter. The ending, however...I'm worried about John Dory. Branch may have his colors back, but he doesn't. Plus his thought of Branch not needing him anymore concerns me. I guess I'm just wondering what's gonna happen to him in the next story based on the 2nd movie?

Hi! I’m so glad you like the story!!! Heh heh… You are right to be worried about that man. I won’t give too much away, but there’s definitely a shift in JD’s mental health following the first movie, and into the second.

I like to think that going into Movie One, his mental health definitely wasn’t great, but he was at a point in his life where he just became acclimated to the way things were. He had a purpose, and even if their life wasn’t perfect, he liked it. It was comfortable, and predictable. He wasn’t happy, but he was content.

Movie One has thrown a lot of change his way, plus a lot of added mental strain, both from the past (Which he still hasn’t dealt with) and the present (Which he refuses to acknowledge), and the epilogue of Movie One and going into Movie Two is going to reflect that strain.

I’m really excited for you to see where this goes! But for now, stay tuned!

Do you have any plans for the It's Like You're My Mirror series? Don’t get me wrong, I love Great Decisions with all my heart, and it’s impressive how fast you are working on it, insane stuff, but the vibe is just different, and is honestly impressive you can write two very distinct version of JD that still have the same issues, just in different stages.

Great Decisions JD is functionally depressed, while in It's Like You're My Mirror he has been functionally depressed for 20+ years and that man is trying his best to not have a breakdown, and failing miserably.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any plans to expand on the “It’s Like You’re My Mirror” series. I love it so much, but I think it reached a natural ending! I wanted to leave it partially open ended so people could come up with their own ideas for how it would continue, how they thought it might turn out. But I’m so glad that you like it so much! It holds a special place in my heart.

Thank you for all your kind words as well! Our Great Decisions John Dory will have plenty more time to have a mental breakdown after the events of the first movie, so just hang on tight! Ha ha…
